Late Sunday night, I had an idea for a new way to make a double pom pom beanie. I stayed up til early morning writing out my idea so I wouldn't forget. Last night I finally had the chance to test it out! My daughter loves it! She requested I use a bunch of different pinks for the pom poms… she even picked out what pinks in my scrap yarn bin. Although I call this free pattern the “Double The Fun – Double The Flop” It could VERY easily be turned into a puppy hat. The flaps are PERFECT for puppy ears. My daughter calls this new hat her “Pink Poodle Hat” 😀 This free pattern is available in Adult, Child, and Toddler sizes. Have fun!!
Supplies
Bulky 5 (I used Lion Brand Tweed Stripes) I also used a bunch of random pink yarns for the pom poms… my daughters request 🙂

Closing The Top of The Hat
Flip the hat inside out. Fold your hat flat so the increase parts are on the left and right side… the SC stitches should be in the middle (front and back). Attach your yarn to the tip of the right side. CH 1, SC across- joining the front and back together the entire way across.
Pom Poms
Use the Secure Pom Pom Tutorial for making 2 pom poms. Attach them using your yarn needle.

This looks adorable, do you know the gauge? So I can make sure mine is coming out the right size, I usually have to adjust my tension to meet gauge. Thanks!
Corina says
Still learning how to take gauge but I will do my best! 😀 Since the pattern starts on the brim, I measured three stitches across and also three rows in the brim and they both measured to an inch. 🙂

Hi, I am trying to make the adult size for a friend (who is fighting cancer). I am only getting a 17″ brim after 2 rows. What size brim do you get (measured round the inside bottom on the hat.) normally everything I make comes out huge because I have a loose tension so I am surprised this has come out midget. I know I have done the adult size because I have done 52 FSC. I have had to swop the yarn to sirdar folksong chunky as I can’t get lion brand easily here in uk. I checked the gauge on this and it is the same as tweed stripes so that shouldn’t be the problem. She loves the hat and I am desperate for help so I can get it done for her as she starts her next round of treatment. Thanks.
Corina says
The brim is made with FPSC’s so it is really stretchy. If you need to add stitches you can add them by counts of two to your starting FSC.
Elise Stewart says
Thanks. I will measure it on her head today. go up and hook size to 7mm and see if that is better. It does stretch a lot but not a whole 5″ which it would need to for my head.

I love the style of your hat, but am having trouble making one.
Should all the sc at the front and back of the main body be centered at the front and back of the head? I’m having trouble with this in rows 2-4 and 5. My (single crochets) on these rows are offset to the right of center of the hat.
I don’t know if it’s related to the same (above) issue or not, but the floppy parts of my hat are not nearly as long as yours (in pic) and they dont flop over as nicely. Do you have any ideas what I might be doing wrong based on my problems?
Thanks for any guidance you can offer. I would really love to make this hat….successfully. Lol!
Corina says
Have you added the pom poms yet? The weight of those help the sides flop. 😀
Corina says
Also, what yarn are you using?
KT says
Thank you so much! Made this for my daughter and she loves it! I’m on #2 now she wants one without the poms so she can look like a puppy. Her words not mine. Thanks again for the pattern.

Hello!
Making this for my granddaughter. I’m on the body part of the hat now and I’m done with row 1. Do I join to first sc?
