Daniel in the Lions Den

July 15, 2012 By Corina 4 Comments

After one of my readers used my snake puppet pattern , She contacted me asking for advice on changing it up to a lion puppet. She will be doing a puppet show at her church telling the story of  Daniel in the Lions Den.  What a great idea and thank you for letting me be part of this!

Supplies:
Yellow, Red, Orange, and brown Peaches and Creme cotton yarn
Yarn needle
2 Buttons
G/6 -4.25 Crochet hook

Abbreviations:
CH – Chain
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
SC – Single Crochet

Part 1

Row 1: Magic circle, CH 2, 9 HDC, connect to top of CH 2
Row  2: CH 2, HDC in same stitch, 2 HDC in each HDC around, connect to top of CH 2
Row 3: CH 2, HDC in same stitch, HDC in next 3 HDC, *2 HDC  into the next stitch, HDC into next 3 HDC. Repeat from * around. Connect to top of CH 2
Row 4-8: CH2, HDC around, connect to top of CH2

Part 2

Row 1: CH 5, HDC into 3rd CH from hook, 2 HDC in next CH, 4 HDC into last CH. Now continue around to the other side of the CH, 2 HDC in next CH, 2 HDC in last CH (already has 2 HDC ) Join to top of CH 2
Row 2-6: CH 2, HDC into each HDC around. Join to top of CH 2

Part 3

 Place part 1 and part 2 together at the seam {Like in the picture above}. Join just to the right of the seam, SC across into next 6 stitches {Like in the picture below}

Now switch to working in rounds

HDC in next stitch {in the picture above} Continue HDC around the outside stitches for 13 rounds.  SC into next stitch, slip stitch into next stitch.

CH 3, DC around, Join to the top of CH3.

CH 1, SC in same space SC around, Connect to first SC

Finish off and weave in ends

I cut 4 inch stands of yarn for making my lion mane.

Add mane to 3rd and 4th rows. Add 3 or 4 strands into each stitch of those two rows

Insert hook, wrap yarn pieces around hook.

Pull yarn through creating a loop.

Wrap ends around hook.

Pull ends through loop.

Tug on ends to make tight.

NOSE

CH 4, HDC into 3rd CH from hook, 4 HDC in next CH, 2 HDC into ther first CH on the other side (already has 2 HDC)

CH 1, SC in same stitch, SC around, Join to first SC

Finish off leaving a long tail and attach to lion. ( I had to scrunch up my lion to get it attached well.)

NEXT  Attach the eyes!  I just used two brown buttons 🙂

Thanks! When I was making it I realized I probably should have added the nose a little sooner bc it was a little hard attaching it at the end… but it is doable if you roll it up lol. Would love to see it when its finished!

This is an easy pattern! I’ve made several and will continue to do so (in various colors). Adorable when finished. Thank you!
