Granny’s Slouch Hat

August 8, 2013 By Corina 41 Comments

Free Slouch Hat Crochet Pattern
Yesterday my husband took me to JoAnn Fabrics to get a few sets of safety eyes. I purposely kept my eyes on the “Isle 10” sign so I could avoid looking at the yarn before getting what I had came for. Before I could even grab the little bag of eyes off the display hook, Chad was already telling me how many great yarn deals were going on a few isles down. In the lovely little piece of yarn heaven I noticed a box of huge Medium Weight Bernat Cotton marked down to 5 dollars each. The price wasn't as appealing as the 97 cent specialty yarns but the beautiful colors and amount of yardage was too good to pass up!
It did not take me long after getting this yummy yarn in my hand that I was visualizing this very hat! Super quick, super fun, and I think its a pretty easy one too!  So grab your K hook and get hookin'! Now Available –Toddler Granny Slouch– Child Size Granny Slouch

So very cute! This is my next project!! Thank you for freely sharing your designing talents with us. I appreciate it!! I love to crochet to donate to charitable organizations, but the costs add up on the yarn alone, so it’s an extra special treat to get a free cute pattern,

That’s so funny!! I was in Joann’s earlier this week for the SAME reason and saw the SAME yarn! But I passed on it because I had just bought some expensive yarn from my local yarn store. Now I have a reason to go back 🙂
    Thanks for the great pattern.
    Blessings 🙂

Hey Corina just wondering about round 16, when it say HDC after the 1st 25hdc is that supposed to be another HDC DEC? then should it be HDC into the rest ? Thanks so much and thank you for sharing all of your great patterns!!!

I came across your site quite by accident. I’m in love with your patterns! I’ve already made the grocery bag holder (with some of my own touches). I’m working on this hat now. I’ve just finished the fourth round and am worried that it’ll be a little small for my big head, since there’s no more increases. Could it still work if I repeat the pattern for the fourth round to make a larger hat?

Yeah you can make it larger… it will keep getting a little larger on its own though.

Really confused after row 14!!! In row 15: do you do CH 1 and hdc in between the dc’s in the previous row? Or along the ones on top?

On round 15 I crocheted into each DC. If the hat is too small for you, maybe try using a larger hook or not decreasing in round 16. What kind of yarn are you using?

OMG so frustrated with this. Lol OK on row 16…I did CH 1 hcd Dec n hcd in 1st 25. Then had dec. When I do the next 25 hdc…its only like half way around.

Ok, I must be really slow but please explain how you join to the top of the CH 3 of round 1 then get to the next CH space while you are changing colors. Do you slip stitch then tie off & cut? Then you would start the new color in the next space, right?Do you slipstitch in the round 1 color to the CH space and then change color? ARG! I wanted to get a little extra present to my daughter for Christmas. Help!

You can either slip stitch until you get to the chain space or you can slip stitch, finish off, and attach a new color to the chain space.

If you don’t want to change colors rather than doing all the slip stitches, you can attach the last stitch of the granny row to 3rd chain of the first granny with a HDC. I then chain 3 and start the next DCs (or whatever) of the granny over the space made by to the left (I’m a righty) by the HDC. Just easier and less bulky…cannot find the join unless you are really looking for it. Thanx for the pttn. Much appreciated.

I wanted to make a tween one tonight but because I crochet so loose I always end up making things too large. So I made this one in a vintage frosted fisherman yarn using an I hook and it came out awesome! (Yep, I normally have to go two hook sizes down to hit proper gauge on something). Bonus is it took maybe two hours and doesn’t use as much yarn as I thought. Thank you for the great patterns!!

The cotton usually works up thicker than the average medium weight. That could be why.

And the pattern does call for a 6.5 mm crochet hook.
