The Chloe

April 24, 2012 By Corina 23 Comments

This free pattern for size 6-9 month Newsie hat was very fun for me to make. Thank you Erika for letting your beautiful little Chloe be our model! And thanks Jerri Sparks Photography for these gorgeous photos!!

Supplies:
4 ply worsted weight yarn ( I used Acrylic “I love this yarn” but if you need a looser fit use “Peaches and cream” cotton yarn)
5mm (H/8) hook

Abbreviations:
CH – Chain
SC- Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Round 1: Magic Ring, CH 3, DC 10, pull ring tight, join to top CH of CH 3
Round 2: CH 3, 2 DC each DC around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (20 DC)
Round 3: Ch 3. *2 DC in next DC, DC in next DC, repeat from * around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (30 DC)
Round 4: CH 3. *2 DC in next DC, DC in next 2 DC, repeat from * around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (40 DC)
Round 5: CH 3. *2 DC in next DC, DC in next 3 DC, repeat from * around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (50 DC)
Round 6-10: CH 3, DC in each DC, Join to the top of CH 3
(I changed colors for round 10)

Now the tricky part 😉

1. CH 2, HDC in next 35 stitches
2. Turn, Slip stitch in next 20 stitches.
3. Turn, (Now in this round when you SC you will be making the last two steps (step 1 and 2) into one larger stitch.) SC in first stitch, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in the rest of the stitches back across the brim of the hat.
4. Turn, Slip stitch back across the brim of the hat.
5. Turn ( in this round when you SC you will be making the last two steps (step 3 and 4) into one larger stitch.) SC across the brim, but in the 3rd to last stitch of the brim do 2 SC
6. Turn, slip stitch back across the brim
7. Turn ( in this round when you SC you will be making the last two steps (step 5 and 6) into one larger stitch.) SC across the brim, but in the 2nd stitch on both ends of the brim do 2 SC
8. SC down the side of the brim and HDC back around to the back of the hat. Connect to top CH of CH 2.
9. Slip stitch around the hat and brim.

    Help Please:
First thank you so much for this adorable hat pattern. As we speak , I have crocheted the hat up to the birm where it says, “in this round when you sc you will be making the last two steps into one large stitch”. I have tried everything I can think of and can’t for the life of me figure this out. Am I suppose to sc into rows 1 and two or decrease over these stitches??? Can anyone offer me some suggestion as to how I should correctly following this step.
    Thanks
    Wendy

No decreasing. When you do this sc, your sc will go over both of the previous steps, making both stitches one stitch(the SC and the slip stitch will have the SC over them). It will be thicker and stronger. Does that help?

Last night I stayed up working on this hat. I did make some corrections to the brim… It seemed I had wrote the first two steps twice :/ sorry everyone who had troubles with this pattern. It is fixed!

First, thanks for sharing this fabulous pattern! It is adorable! I’m at the part where I should start the brim. My question is, I have 50 stitches from making the hat portion, why do I DC 35 and then SC 20? That’s a total of 55 stitches. I’ve tried DC into 30 and SC 20 but it didn’t look right (that was my first attempt though). I then tried it as your pattern says, 35 DC and 20 SC. That didn’t look right and it forced me to SC past the beginning CH 2. Please help!

Are you at the brim? are you turning before doing the SC?

      1. CH 2, HDC in next 35 stitches
      2. Turn, Slip stitch in next 20 stitches.

Is this where you mean? With the HDC and SC? Make sure you turn after you do the 35 HDC

OHHH!! I see where you corrected the pattern now! I read your update and even checked my pattern against the updated version. I couldn’t figure out what you updated, but now I see it! I was still trying to SC 20 AND turn and slip stitch! Thanks so much!!

I’m done with the hat and brim! I think it came out pretty good considering I’ve been crocheting for less than a year. Is there a way to send you the picture when it’s done (with the flower)?

Hi! I love this hat! It came out sooo cute. Especially since I haven’t been crocheting for long. :-). I made it for a friend whose baby was baptized yesterday. Unfortunately it didn’t fit her head. :-(. Is there any way that I can make another in a larger size? Is there a trick like adding a few stitches to each round?

I am on row 8 where it tells me to sc down the side of the brim and then hdc the other half of the back. But where does it tell me to sc down the other side of the brim?

It doesnt. You will end up slip stitching around the hat.

I think this an adorable hat, however how can I increase the size as my grand-daughter is 15 months old and her head is lager than the toddler patterns, the last hat was the size of teen.
    Look forward to your respond

slip stitch for your next row.. its the next step that you will stitch into that previous line. Its late… hope I am explaining well enough. <3 let me know if you have anymore questions.
