Extra Small Dog Sweater Crochet Pattern

Extra Small Dog Sweater Crochet Pattern

XS Dog Sweater
Since the cold temperatures are on their way to Indiana, I thought it would be best to make my Avis a new sweater. I went to follow my old dog sweater pattern and was horrified from how poorly it was written. So last night I rewrote the pattern 🙂 Hoping this one will be a lot easier for everyone to follow.

Follow this link for the next size up!- Size Small Dog Sweater –

This dog sweater is size XS.  The sweater is 12 inches in length, 6 inches wide, and the edge of the neckline is 9 inches around. This sweater is designed for dogs 5-10 lbs. If your Dog wears size Small, try using a 6mm crochet hook.

This free dog sweater crochet pattern is made to have a snug fit with a fantastic stretch. Easy to pull the head through. The underbelly has a V opening so male dogs do not have an accident on the sweater while hiking their leg outside.

Supplies
5.5 mm crochet hook
(#4)Medium weight yarn
Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Stitches
CH- Chain
SC- Single Crochet

You could just start with a larger chain.. try adding 10 chains and see if it will fit around your dogs belly.

Thanks for posting this cute XS Dog Sweater Pattern!
I knit one up this afternoon and was a bit confused by the directions…

Rows 1-11 are worked flat, with a CH1 and TURN at the beginning of each new row.

Then the pattern says to slip stitch the last st to the first st of the row to make it a circle instead of flat (so as to crochet ‘in the round’), but then one is told to CH1 and TURN at the beg. of rows 12-23…but not on rows 24-25… then CH1 and TURN again rows 26-28… but not on rows 29-34. So, sometimes I was going back and forth ‘in the round’, and sometimes going round and round ‘in the round.’ Does that make sense? Am I just mis-reading the pattern instructions?

The second one I make tonight(the blue one), I’m just going to crochet it ‘in the round’ on ALL rows once I start ‘in the round’ at row 12…and see what happens! Wish me luck! And thanks again for posting the cute pattern!

I kept the “turn” so that the rows looked the same even though it wasn’t a flat piece anymore. I just decided I wanted the part around the arm holes to be different. I liked the look it made when not turning for just those couple rows. I didn’t have you turn around the neck band because the stitches were different so there was no need to try to stick with the same visual pattern. I am glad that you like it! I always encourage people to make their own unique and creative twist based from my patterns. I am glad you were able to see ways you would prefer it. I think I was just checking out your sweater on raverly 🙂 I will keep an eye out for the next one as well! 😀

Oh, I should also let you know that if you do not turn from the V opening to the arm holes, the seam will move to the right.. so you may end up having to adjust where you put the armholes so they are still on the underbelly. Maybe if you are wanting to work in the continuous round, you could start after reaching the arm hole area?

Hi, I’m going to give this sweater a try for my miniature poodle. I will have to increase it but will start with the additional 10 chains you describe below. Most sweaters are long enough from tail base to neck but too short from lower belly point to in front of legs. We shall see.

    Your dog is cute.

Hey Survivor389, I hope you Pedro loves it! Last week we took my Avis and had the tumor removed. he is slowly healing but he is doing well. My biggest concern is getting him to stop licking and ripping out stitches. lol but other than that, he is almost back to his normal self. We take him back into the vet this week to get the incisions looked at.

Having trouble with rows 12-23. I’m only getting 39 stitches instead of 40. I have 40 stitches where it is worked flat, but once i start joining and ch 1 and turning, i’m only getting 39. Even putting the first HDC in the same stitch where the ch 1 is. What am i doing wrong? It seemed like this was going to work up quickly until i hit this road block.

I discovered this pattern and have made 2 already. your pattern is simple and easy to read and they came out beautifully! Thank you so much for this free pattern. I think I might want to make a bunch and donate to them to the animal shelter. would that be ok? I wouldn’t be selling them. Just not sure about copy right and all that 😛 Oh and If they do it in the round after the ‘v’, there is a trick you can use. What i do is I will skip the first on every other row and then on the last stitch I will do 2 hdc. I end up with a straight seam that way 🙂 Oh and I would love to show you a picture. How can I do that?

Thanks for the easy pattern! Definitely one of the best I’ve made for my little Dexter. I did make an adjustment with the ribbing. I found that I was losing stitches for some reason and the ribbing wasn’t as accentuated as what you have. So I did alternate FPDC/BPDC and it worked!

I am stuck on row 7. On row 6 you said at the end of you would end up with 38 hdc, which I have. When I start round 7 I add the extra hdc in the first hdc and then hdc 17 times like your pattern says. Then it says 2 hdc in the next stitch. Then hdc another 17 times, then 2 hdc in last hdc. This is where i am confused. I hdc 17 times and ended up with 2 unworked hdc. Also if I did my math right even if it had come out right then I would end up with 42 hdc not 40. Did I do something wrong or is the pattern written wrong?

I absolutely love how easy to follow your pattern is! I have been looking for something quick and working in the round for my youngest princess, Darkness. She is about 5lbs and a chihuahua. I found this beautiful super chunky soft yarn that I would love to use…but I think it would be too chunky or stiff once made for her. Do you have any suggestions to make it work or should I just use a less chunky yarn?
    Thanks for sharing your awesomeness!

You probably could use chunky but you will want to adjust the pattern to be her size. You will want to have an even count with your stitches because the neck area goes by counts of two.

      HDC means Half Double Crochet

I use a ** to mark a spot in the pattern, that once you complete the step, it will tell you how many times to repeat from ** to finish the round.

I just wanted to THANK YOU so much for posting this pattern!!! I have ALWAYS struggled with other people’s patterns, but yours worked PERFECTLY!!! The only things I chose to do on each row that was not stated was TURN on every row except for the neck and I added one more row (decreasing by 4 stitches) to the legs. I am IN LOVE with this pattern!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!

I just made this for my 8 lb. cavapoo puppy and it fits him perfectly. Hes going to grow to about 12-15 lbs, and I want to make him another one that’s a bit thicker. Will increasing the yarn weight and hook size make it big enough, or should I follow the pattern for the small?

Thanks so much for the adorable pattern!

I’m currently working flat, as that’s easier for me to do (I think) and I’m up to rows 30-33. I’ve HDC and FPDC alternatively on row 30, but now I don’t know how to keep going? I’m relatively new at crochet so this may be a silly question…sorry I’m advance! What am I missing?

When working it flat…how would you connect the two sides together??

I’m curious as to how you attach the yarn to the arm holes? Also do you have any videos of this pattern? This is my first time working up a sweater and using the HDC stitch and I’m unsure if I’m even doing it right lol

Made this for a friend’s pinny-poo and she said it was the best fitting dog sweater to date! I’m now making three more for a friend who fosters Dachshunds. Thanks for the pattern!

Thank you for this pattern! Finally, a well-written, easy dog sweater pattern that can be made quickly in an evening or two. I plan to make several of these sweet sweaters!

Found this pattern online while searching for a sweater for my 6lb Chihuahua/Min Pin mix. Added a few more rows once I realized it would be great for my daughters Chiweenie! It fits her perfectly!!! Can’t wait to make her more. You wrote this pattern out so well!
