Commonly Questions Asked about Crochet Flower Patterns

Before we jump to our crochet flower patterns, we have gathered some frequently asked questions when it comes to crocheting flowers. Here's what you need to know to get started!

What Are the Materials Needed for Crocheting a Flower?

The nice thing about crocheted flower patterns is that you can often use materials you already have at home, such as:

  • Yarn in the color and weight of your choice (scraps are great for this!)
  • Crochet hook that matches the yarn or the pattern suggestion
  • Scissors to cut your yarn when you change colors or at the end of the project
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

What is the Recommended Yarn Used for Crochet Flowers?

Many crochet flower patterns use worsted weight (4) or DK weight (3) yarn. But if you prefer making small flowers, you can use fingering weight yarn or crochet thread.

The pattern you are considering will tell you what type of yarn the designer used, but you can always use a heavier weight yarn to make a larger flower or a lighter weight yarn to make a smaller flower if you like. The great thing about flowers is they don’t have to be an exact size!

How Do You Choose Yarn for Crocheting Flowers?

If you have some yarns that you already like, those are great choices for crocheted flowers. If you are planning to add your flower to another project that will include a different, lighter-colored yarn, check for color fastness by working a small swatch with both colors and washing it to make sure the color doesn’t bleed.

If you’re not using stash, cotton and acrylic yarns are great for flowers. And don’t forget to consider the color. You can make your flowers the colors they would be in nature or go wild with your color choices.

Where Can You Use a Crochet Flower?

Crochet flowers have many uses. The most common uses are hair clips, headbands, ear warmers, and the like. But that's not the only use for crochet flowers.

You can attach them to many projects like hats, blankets, socks, dresses, scarves, gloves, tops, and many others that you would like to include a crochet flower.

They can also stand alone as an addition to a gift box or bag, or some flowers can be attached to pipe cleaner stems and used as a crochet bouquet! They’re great for home decor projects, too, like wreaths and garlands.

Is It Easy to Crochet a Flower?

Yes! Crochet flowers are easy to make, and you can often complete one in an hour or less. If you are a beginner, there are plenty of patterns and tutorials that guide you every step of the way.

These projects often use simple stitches like single crochets, double crochet, and half double crochet, so if you know the basics you should be in good shape. But we can teach you 45 other stitches that you can use for this project or any other one that you are looking to customize or spice up. Learn all of the stitches here in my Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library.

Of course, you can use any weight of yarn you want for any kind of flower, but in case you’re wanting to use stash yarn and are looking for projects that are great with that particular weight, we’ve arranged all these free crochet flower patterns by yarn weight below. Happy stitching!

Flower Bud Granny Square – Free Crochet Pattern – Review

April 7, 2015 By stitch11 1 Comment

Flower Bud Granny Square - Free Crochet Pattern - Review

Most of us in the crochet community has noticed the beautiful flower bud crochet patterns by Dearest Debi over the last year or so. I have been waiting for an excuse to work one up since her first Flower Bud Stitch tutorial. What better excuse (for me) than decorating a tree!

I am a nature lover! Always have been and always will be. There is something about the outdoors that feels healing to the soul.
A few years ago, I put 6 granny squares on a tree, deep in the woods at one of my favorite hiking areas. Since then I have seen people posting photos of my mini yarn bomb with amazement of what they discovered while hiking or bird watching. 😀 Fills my heart with so much joy to know people get excited when they stumble across it.  So, this Spring, every time I hike that direction, I bring some yarn love to add to it. I can't help but to hope and wonder how long it will take before another hooker decides to add to it. 😀

This lovely Flower Bud Granny Square pattern (<- link) is going to make a beautiful addition to my yarn bomb! The pattern was VERY easy for me to follow and it worked up extremely quick. These squares would make an adorable baby blanket! And, not only is this pattern beautiful and easy… but it is also free!

Infant Cocoon Flower Photo Prop – Free Crochet Pattern

March 8, 2015 By stitch11 14 Comments

Infant Cocoon Flower Photo Prop Free Crochet Pattern Stitch11

This project came to me while I was at the Dollar Store. I was buying some candles and My Little Ponies… when the man behind the register complimented my daughters hat. He proceeds to tell me he is expecting.. and would love to make a crochet order. I instantly knew what I wanted to make for his baby girl (due to arrive this Spring).
After chatting with his wife on Facebook.. we had settled on the direction I would run with the project.. and I also let her know I would be gifting the photo prop to her.
As many of you know, I do not take very many crochet orders. But for some reason, I felt the urge to crochet a flower pattern for photo prop for the wittle baby growing in her belly. 🙂 Gotta follow your heart!
This infant photo prop is very stretchy. It should work great for newborn to at the least 6 month old's. you may be able to make it work for even larger babies.. but since I do not have any babies on hand, I can't test it out. Maybe the mother will share some photos with us this Spring!

Leaf Edging
Using Simply Soft – Limlight (light green)
Join your yarn to the edge of one of the leaves. You will be putting 2 SC into the side of each DC while working around the edge. When you get to the places where the leaves join each other, you will just put 1 SC between the stitches. When you get to the tip of the leaves. {1 SC CH 3, slip stitch to first CH. 1 SC.} All into the tip of each leaf.  Work your way around and join to your starting SC.

You are almost done. Remember your starting end? The one at the bottom of the crochet piece? Take it and weave it back and forth between step one and two. Pull tight and secure your end. This make the first round you crocheted stick out like a little bump.. giving the look as if you plucked the flower right off the stem.
Now that you have done that, weave in all of your other ends. Now, all that is left to do- find a cute baby!!! 😉

When I first discovered this pattern, I loved the way the flower petals curled and went together. I had no clue how she accomplished such a pretty and unique look. I knew I had to crochet one!

The technique she has for adding rows of petals is something I have never seen done before. Not only is it different, but it's also simple. You get the 3D flower without the bulk! This flower will make a great embellishment!

The Perfect Flower – Free Crochet Pattern – Review

The Perfect Flower - Free Crochet Pattern - Review

The term “Nothing is what is seems” comes to mind when I made this flower. When I first looked at the photo, it reminded me of my beginner crochet days, when I would make multiple flowers, layer them, and attach them together with a button.
This flower does NOT do that!!!! No more wasting time making layers!!! This flower is quick, simple, unique, and ONE flower!

I was so curious as to how it was going to come together (I never read ahead on patterns.. I know, shame on me. 😉 ) So when I realized the back and front petals are done first, and then the middle layer of petals, I was pretty impressed and amazed!

Free Pansy Flower Crochet Pattern – Review

Free Pansy Flower Crochet Pattern - Review

I have been admiring this flower pattern for about a year now. So, when I asked my designer friends to share their flower links with me, I was so excited to finally have the push to complete it. That is, until I realized I had already packed away my buttons! We are moving during this next week… and I really didn't want to move the boxes around to find the right craft tote.
Perfect excuse to go button shopping!!!! I found these little pearl buttons at Walmart. I knew they would be perfect for the flower color combos I had in mind.
My favorite part of following this pattern wasn't how easy it was (although it is VERY easy!) But just seeing the way other designers brains work. >.< I know this sounds silly.. but each of us think in different ways. The way she put this pansy together is perfect!! And is also something I would have never thought of on my own. So “Thank you!” Little Monkey's Crochet for sharing your crochet smarts, and this pattern with us!

Fantastic Curly Flower -Free Crochet Pattern -Review

Oombawka Design Crochet shared this fun free flower crochet pattern with me. This is the 3rd flower I have decided to work up and review while I am in the process of moving.

The pattern is very easy and fun to follow. Great little pattern when you need to add some pretty sass to a project.

The entire time I was crocheting the pedals, my kitten was trying to eat my project! It all started with the yarn ball but once she seen the curly pedals.. she wasn't going to give up! I will probably attach this beautiful flower to a string and let it be hers… after all, she is princess Beauty. 😉

Have your first mommy-baby twinning moment with these headbands! The beauty (aside from the cute rose at top) of it, is it's perfect for anyone. Stitch11 Rose and Headband - Free Crochet Pattern

I recently started wearing crochet headbands when I would try to pull off the “Elsa Braid”. Without one, my hair on one side would slowly fall down. It didn't take long before my daughter started begging me to make her headbands also.

Crochet headband sizes can be a little tricky so if you do not know what the measurements are for the person you will be making the headband, check out >>>this<<<  chart. It's by far my favorite! You can also try this crochet headband pattern out with different yarns and hook sizes too to get just the right feel and fit.

By the way, if you enjoy crocheting projects for the little ones in your life, If you enjoy crocheting toys for the little people in your life, check out these incredibly cute stuffies in the Crochet Anything with Hexagons class.

Upcycle Ladies Shirt into a child size dress

I have been wanting to make my daughter a comfy dress to throw over her swimsuit after swimming. I was planning on crocheting the entire dress.  After brainstorming and searching for the perfect pattern… I just couldn't get motivated by anything I found or thought up.

That is, until I visited Petals To Picots website. Right on the top of her page, I seen a beautiful crochet African Flower design she made. I searched through her free patterns until I got the instructions. “This is it!” kept going through my mind.

Flower Keychain

June 3, 2014 By stitch11 5 Comments

Flower of Dreams Keychain

I needed something to attach to my keys and help me find them while I dig aimlessly through my purse.
I didn't want to use my ugly keys for the photo so I used one of the “magic keys” I ordered my daughter online. She is waiting patiently to discover a magic door to test her keys on. Her brother Brennan is fascinated by the keys as well, so we have decided to start collecting neat and unique keys. Have fun with this beautiful keychain flower pattern– and just in case you want your own magical keys 😉 my amazon link will be at the bottom of the post.

How to Crochet a Hawaiian Lei

May 7, 2014 By stitch11 4 Comments

How To Crochet a Hawaiian Lei - by Stitch11
I have been in what many people call a “Crochet Rut”. It seems like every time I have felt this way…. I am actually just waiting for the right inspiration to boost me back into the hook of things. After weeks.. maybe even months of waiting for that right idea to pop into my head, I remembered one of the things I wrote on my invisible “to crochet” list- a crochet Hawaiian Lei!
The reason this was one of the first things on my list is because I have made them before, just out of fabric cut outs of flowers and fake flowers I found at yard sales. I even made a giant one that my MIL still uses as a decoration around her Hawaiian themed bathroom.
I loved the fabric ones, but the fabric flowers were so thin, it didn't give me the look I had pictured.
When learning how to crochet, flowers were the second thing I taught myself how to do (ear flap hats being the first). So, naturally I thought of the Hawaiian Lei instantly.
I now know why I was in the rut… I needed to back up about 2 years on that invisible list I keep! 😉

This Hawaiian Lei has many possibilities. Have fun with your yarn choices. Dig through your stash and get creative!
