30 Easy Lacy Crochet Scarf Patterns

September 19, 2023 By stitch11 Leave a Comment

Lacy Crochet Scarfs

Lacy crochet scarf patterns are a step up in skill level from scarves using basic stitch patterns, but they’re a great way to learn more intricate stitches and add a handmade touch to your wardrobe any time of year.

Lace scarves usually have a repeating stitch pattern, so as soon as you learn the basics it’s simple to repeat that design as long as you want for your scarf. And many of these stitches are just variations on the basic crochet stitches, so they shouldn’t be too much of a challenge!

How Do You Crochet a Lace Scarf?

Lace scarves, like any other crocheted scarf, are typically rectangles and can be worked from the top down (meaning from one short side to the other) or from side to side, using a long chain that is the same length as your scarf.

Lacy crochet scarf patterns often use one or several repeating stitch patterns to make the design, so make sure you’re comfortable with all the techniques before you get started.

If you need any help understanding what the pattern wants you to do, our Crochet Fundamentals workshop can help. It will teach you everything from basic stitches to finishing techniques so your projects will end up looking just like the ones in the pictures.

How Long is the Average Crochet Scarf?

Crocheted scarves can be made to any length you like. Sometimes lacy crochet scarves are shorter than you might make a winter scarf because they are worn more as an accessory than something to keep you warm.

In general, though, scarves are worked to about the length that the recipient is tall. When working a scarf from a short end, you can easily alter the pattern to make it shorter or longer based on who you are giving it to and how it will be worn.

Just keep in mind the pattern repeat and make sure you’ve completed a full repeat of the pattern if it is more than one row before you finish off your work.

Materials for Lacy Crochet Scarf Patterns

The most important consideration when making a lacy crochet scarf is what yarn you want to use. Typically lighter weight yarns are used for lace scarves (up to a 4, worsted weight) and sometimes a larger hook is used that would typically be called for with that weight of yarn to emphasize the openness of the stitches.

You don’t necessarily need to check gauge when working a scarf pattern, because if your scarf comes out a slightly different size it’s not a big deal. But if you want to make a swatch so you can practice and make sure you understand all the pattern abbreviations and techniques, that can be helpful.

When it comes to fiber content, any fiber you like can be used to crochet a lace scarf, from cotton to acrylic, wool and blends. Since scarves tend to touch the skin you’ll want to use something that is soft to touch.

In addition to yarn and the size crochet hook called for in the pattern, you’ll also need:

  • Scissors for trimming yarn ends
  • Yarn needle or tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Stitch markers can also be handy if your pattern has different lace sections in the same row

The following free lacy crochet scarf patterns are arranged by yarn weight in case you want to use something special from your stash or are looking for a lighter weight scarf for summer or a heavier one for the transitional seasons. Either way you’re sure to find a stunning, lacy scarf you can’t wait to get on your hook!

How Do You Crochet a Pocket Scarf?

A crochet pocket scarf is usually just a long rectangle, and they are often made with simple stitches such as single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc).

The pockets can be made by making the scarf longer than you need and folding up the ends to make the pockets, or you can make patch pockets by stitching up the pocket parts separately and sewing them to each end of the scarf to make the pocket.

You can even design your own pocket scarf using whatever stitches you like. Our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library brings you 45 different stitch options with video tutorials to help you learn.

To make your scarf you’ll need your desired yarn and a crochet hook of corresponding size. You’ll also want a yarn needle to sew on your pockets. Locking stitch markers can be helpful for holding the pocket in place while you sew.

What’s the Difference Between a Pocket Scarf and Pocket Shawl?

Generally, a pocket shawl is wider than a pocket scarf. Crochet pocket scarves are narrow enough to wrap around your neck like a regular scarf if you want to.

On the other hand, crochet pocket shawls are wider and meant to be worn over the shoulders. Pocket shawl patterns use more yarn in general, but you can convert a scarf into a shawl or stole by making it wider.

How Long Should a Pocket Scarf Be?

In general, scarves are worked to about the same length as the wearer is tall (or measured from fingertip to fingertip with arms spread in a T from the body. Because the scarf needs to be long enough for the person’s hands to fit in the pockets, it’s important to measure if you can.

If you plan to wear the scarf wrapped around the neck, account for that when you measure.

The width of a pocket scarf can vary but needs to be at least wide enough for hands to fit comfortably in the pockets.

Choosing Yarn for Crochet Pocket Scarves

The pocket scarf crochet patterns shared here all use (4) worsted weight or heavier yarns, making them warm and cozy to stitch and to wear. The patterns are arranged by yarn weight, so if you already have yarn you want to use you can find the pattern that best suits your yarn.

You can choose to use wool or a wool blend for your scarf for extra warmth, or use acrylic yarn for easy care. Since scarves touch your neck you’ll want to pick a yarn that is soft to the touch.

The Best Crochet Stitches for Scarf Patterns

Any stitch you like can be used in your pocket crochet scarf project, from simple stitches like single and double crochet to projects using post stitches, clusters, shells, V stitches and more. Usually stitches that are dense are preferred if you want a warm scarf.

These free crochet patterns will get you started thinking about how you’d like your pocket scarf to look, but you can always go your own way with your favorite crochet stitches as well.

Pocket Scarf Crochet Patterns Using Worsted Weight Yarn

Most crocheters have a nice stash of worsted weight yarn hanging around, and it’s the easiest to get your hands on at local craft stores or online. These pocket scarf crochet patterns are easy to stitch and great for gifts, maybe even using yarn you already have on hand!

Supplies You Need to Crochet Shawls

As with most types of crochet projects, you don’t need a lot of supplies to get started crocheting shawls.

Yarn

A shawl can be crocheted using various fibers and yarn weights. If you’re working from a pattern it will tell you both the yarn weight and the fiber content the designer used.

It’s important to stick to the same yarn weight if you want your shawl to come out about the same size as the designer intended. If you use lighter weight yarn, your project will be smaller, or if you use heavier yarn it will be larger if you don’t adjust your stitch count.

Paying attention to the fiber used is important but not as vital. Still, the yarn chosen might have particular qualities the designer was looking for in their project, so whenever possible it’s nice to use the same fiber (though it’s not necessary to use the exact same yarn if it’s not available to you).

Crochet Hook

If you are working from a published crochet shawl pattern, you’ll want to use the size crochet hook called for in the pattern.

You can check your gauge to make sure you’re getting the same number of stitches per inch as the designer and adjust if necessary. Since shawls don’t have to be an exact size, if you like the look of the stitches with the yarn and hook you are using it’s fine if you don’t have the exact gauge, just be aware your project might be a little bigger or smaller than the pattern states.

If you are designing your own shawl and have chosen the yarn you want to use, check the label for the recommended crochet hook size. You can adjust as needed to get the look and feel for the fabric you want, but that’s a good starting point.

Other Supplies You Need

Besides our yarns and hooks, there are a few other supplies you might want to have handy:

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Tape measure
  • Stitch marker (especially if working a round shawl)

What is the Most Common Shape for a Crochet Shawl?

There are several common shapes for crochet shawl patterns to use. Rectangles (especially with pockets and/or hoods) are quite popular, as well as triangles, which require you to know how to do increases and decreases.

If you’re planning to crochet a project that uses some techniques you aren’t familiar with, our Crochet Fundamentals course is a great place to learn. These quick videos teach you all the basic stitches, shaping and finishing techniques, and much more.

Crochet Stitches Used for Crocheting Shawls

Basic crochet stitches are often used in crochet shawls because they are quick, easy, and effective as crocheted fabric.

If you don’t already know them, it’s a good idea to learn single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet, because many stitch patterns are based on these basic stitches.

The free crochet patterns listed here use a variety of stitches, and if you want to design your own shawl you can check out the 45 different stitch pattern options in our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library.

Hopscotch Skinny Scarf - Free Crochet Pattern

When Red Heart Yarns contacted me to make a skinny scarf, I'm sure you can imagine my excitement!!! When the yarn arrived, I simply just fell in LOVE!
The colors and texture of Red Heart Hopscotch “Bicycle” is amazing!!!  The yarn glided so easily with my hands and hook.  If you crochet often, you know how nice it is to find a yarn that just flows from the hook and is gentle on your tension fingers.  Maybe I am a weakling, but the skin on my fingers was so greatful for this soft yarn.
Remember to get your copy of this free crochet pattern and also to SHARE the love! <3

Eccentric Pixie – Jumbo Scarf

September 12, 2016 By stitch11 Leave a Comment

eccentric-pixie-jumbo-scarf-design-by-stitch11-red-heart-yarns

The Red Heart Joy Creators have been given the fun and exciting challenge of designing Red Heart Super Scarves! These scarves are fun because they are HUGE! Definitely warm and trendy!
HERE is the link to the Joy Creators Super Scarves and schedule.
Also check out the Super Scarves already available on the Red Heart website HERE.

With the Eccentric Pixie – Jumbo Scarf, I used Red Heart “Sweet” jumbo yarn. It has a similar texture as Baby Blanket Yarn but is much thicker! I tested out a few sizes of hooks, and the P – 11 mm (recommended on yarn label) was by far the easiest to work with.
Using simple Single Crochet and Double Crochet I was able to create an AMAZING texture.
The Eccentric Pixie scarf will be this season's wonderful and quick project for gifting, craft fairs, quick cash, and of course…YOU!

Supplies
Size P – 11.5 mm crochet hook
Red Heart “Sweet” – Jumbo (7) yarn (3 Balls)
Yarn needle

Stitches
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Notes
– While using this yarn, if you have to frog a part of your project, do it slowly.
-Be sure to use a yarn needle that is sized for thick yarn.
-Time to complete – 1 day = 24 hours  -while also being a wife, mother, chef, taxi, maid…. you get the idea! This scarf is super quick to work up!
-Although I say 3 balls of yarn, you really only need about 2.5.  In other words, 5 balls + 2 days = Two beautiful jumbo scarves!
-Each scarf would ideally be sold for 40-50 dollars.
-You can choose your own colors of Red Heart “Sweet” HERE!

Eccentric Pixie – Jumbo Scarf
Row 1: CH 16. Turn. Skip 1 CH. SC into next 15 CH.

Row 2: CH 2. Turn. DC into first stitch. *CH 1. Skip 1 Stitch. DC into next stitch. Repeat from * across.
Row 3: CH 1. Turn. SC into DC. *SC into CH space. SC into next DC. Repeat from * across.

Repeat rows 2-3 until scarf measures 90 inches (7.5 ft).

Finish off and weave in your ends.
Easy peasy!

Sometimes plans can change. I keep putting off my WIP. My current excuse is that I am sick, and don't want to crochet my germs into the project. 😉 Why are there projects that just don't want to be finished? Or that just scream “Noooooo” when you go to pick it up?
To make up for lost crochet time, I decided to put together a round up of all the scarf patterns I have written or reviewed.  Each one of these was fun to finish and only scream “MAKE ME!” ha ha!
I will list/link them from the top, left to right.

Before I share the pattern, I want to take a moment to share with you how much I am loving this “Velvety” yarn from Red Heart. It's super soft which is a given for the “love” factor.. but even when you make a mistake and go to ribbit it all out, it pulls back out so easily! Major bonus!

Moogly Reviewed by Stitch11 – Learning the Tunisian – Free Infinity Scarf Crochet Pattern – Review

Moogly reviewed by Stitch11 - Free Infinity Scarf Crochet Pattern - review

First of all, you can get your copy of the free Infinity Scarf pattern HERE.

View the Moogly video tutorial that helped me figure out the Tunisian stitch HERE.

There comes a point in almost every season, when I know I am ready to learn a new stitch. When the desire of learning something new hit's me, one of the first places I check out is www.mooglyblog.com. She never fails me!

When I first laid eyes on her Tunisian Infinity Scarf crochet pattern.. I knew it would be my next project. I had never used the stitch for anything… and I was finally ready!
Just by reading through her simple pattern, I had a really good idea of how to pull the stitch off. To be safe, I watched her video which just gave me all the confidence I needed.

After completing just a few rows, I was able to close my laptop and crochet while watching Netflix. I love taking a mental break from time to time… and after learning the stitch, my hook flowed quickly and with ease. I didn't have a Tunisian hook, so I just used a regular hook. It worked fine, but I'm sure the hooks Moogly has linked with the pattern would make it even better!

I used Red Hearts Boutique Infinity yarn. It's colors are soft, deep, and bright all at once. The sparkles in the yarn are gorgeous! It has just the right thickness and fluff that I prefer when using Bulky weight yarn. You can purchase  your own Red Heart Boutique Infinity Yarn through my affiliate link here. –> Red Heart Yarn, Infinity Enchanted

Chevron Lace Cowl – (free) pattern review

December 7, 2014 By stitch11 2 Comments

Chevron Lace Cowl

I have been wanting to make something “Chevron” for a very long time now. When I discovered this Chevron Lace Infinity Scarf pattern by Moogly… I quickly put it at the top of my list.

I did use a thicker yarn that the pattern called for. I used Red Heart With Love and a size N crochet hook. I also made the scarf shorter before joining because I have been loving the look and ease of cowls lately more than infinity scarves.
Especially when crocheting for a blind family member, she won't have to worry about the scarf falling and tripping her. And since it's shorter, it's less likely to snag on anything while she is walking.

My first attempt at following the pattern I was REALLY confused, but then I scrolled down a little and found Moogly's diagram. Then it ALL made since. If you have never used a diagram, this will be the perfect project… especially since you have a written pattern to help you understand it!

Thanks Moogly for sharing another great free pattern!

Lean On Me - Free Infinity Scarf Crochet Pattern by Stitch11

The crochet cowl is the type of pattern that can be designed for warm weather or cold. In this case, you can go either way.

I was playing around with some crochet stitches the other night when I discovered a fun and simple way to make this beautiful scarf. The reason I just *had* to write it out was that I wanted to make sure I remember how to make the leaning rows. Just a simple stitch placement and it all falls into place!

Check out some of the other stitches that you can customize this pattern with in my Crochet Library. I have 45 of the best crochet stitches in this collection and you can check them out and learn them all here for free for 2 days!

Generally, when you crochet a cowl, it's either made in the round or as a rectangle and seamed together – this pattern is the latter of those options. If you enjoy crocheting simple shapes like rectangles, you may want to check out my Crochet Anything with Rectangles class where you'll take the basic shape you already have down pat and turn it into useful, practical, and beautifully professional projects.
