How to Crochet a Tote Bag

So, you want to crochet a tote bag? You’re in the right place! Before we begin, here are answers to some of the most common questions about crochet tote bags to get you started.

How Are Tote Bags Constructed?

Many crocheted tote bags are worked from the bottom up. You start with a chain or a magic loop and increase stitches to make a circle or oval shape to make the base of the bag.

Stitches are then worked without increases to form the sides of the bag. The strap or handle is often worked as part of the bag, or it can be stitched separately and sewn on.

Bags can also be made with a flat rectangular bottom, or the sides can be worked and then a long rectangle stitched to make the bottom, sides, and strap all in one piece.

What Materials Do I Need to Crochet a Tote Bag?

Most crochet tote bags only need a few supplies. You will need the following:

  • Yarn: more on that below!
  • Crochet hook: sized appropriately for the weight of yarn you are using or what the pattern calls for
  • Stitch marker: handy if you are working on a project in the round and want to know where the end of the round is
  • Scissors: for trimming yarn
  • Yarn needle: for weaving in ends and sewing pieces of the bag together if needed
  • Notions: zippers, buttons, stitch markers, clasps, bag handles, liners, and bottoms (if needed)

What are the Best Yarns to Use for Tote Bags?

Tote bags can get a lot of wear and tear, depending on how you use them. Choosing the best yarn will help the bag to last a long time. When choosing the suitable yarn to use, it’s important to consider a few things.

Most of these factors come down to how the yarn will work as a bag, how durable the finished bag will be, and how long it will keep looking good.

Yarns that are strong, easy to wash, colorfast, and resistant to pilling make great choices for bags. You also want to pick something in a color you love that fits your budget!

If you plan to use multiple colors in your, make a swatch with all of them and wash them to ensure the colors don’t bleed.

There are pros and cons to different fibers, but this general information can help you decide if you aren’t sure what material to use for your crochet tote bag.

Cotton Yarn

Cotton yarns are the go-to for many crochet bag projects. Cotton is inexpensive, durable, and stretches but not excessively. Worsted weight cotton yarn is a great option you will find used in many of the projects below.

Organic cotton yarns are environmentally friendly and can be found in a range of colors. Conventional cotton yarns come in a great range of colors and can be found at most yarn and craft stores.

Cotton yarn can be a little stiff and hard on the hands, and it’s not the easiest yarn for beginners, but it is a great choice for bags that work hard and last a long time.

Acrylic

Another popular yarn used for tote bags is acrylic yarn. They’re also inexpensive and come in a huge range of colors. They tend to be colorfast, which is great if you want to use several colors in your project.

Some acrylic yarns are softer than others, but they’re all pretty strong, and they are machine washable. They can be a little easier to work with for beginners and generally have good stretch and memory (meaning they bounce back after being stretched).

Wool

We all know wool is great for scarves and sweaters, but it’s also a good choice for bags. Wool is strong and often soft, and it is generally easy to work with. It has great stretch and memory, but can be more expensive than other yarns.

Unless the wool yarn is superwash, you cannot wash projects made with wool in the washing machine. But if your wool bag comes out bigger than expected, you can felt it, which fuses the fibers together, making the fabric more solid and super strong (though with less stretch and stitch definition).

Now that you know the best materials to use when crocheting a tote bag you can begin planning your tote bag project using the following free patterns!

You’ll find bags with relatively solid fabric for carrying lots of groceries or library books, lacier bags for the beach, bags made with granny squares, and big, quick-to-stitch bags made with bulky and super bulky yarns. Let’s dive into all these great crochet tote bag patterns!

Crochet Tote Bags with Solid Fabric

While these crochet tote bag patterns might not be completely solid in their stitching, they don’t have the big mesh and openwork designs you find in some totes that are made to be market or beach bags. If you need a bag that’s a bit more sturdy or can hold small things without lining, these are the patterns for you.

Momma Beach Bag Crochet Pattern #crochetbag #crochetbeachbag #crochetlove #crochetaddict

Momma Beach Bag Crochet Pattern

This is not your momma’s beach bag. Well, it is. But you’ll want one for yourself as well once you see how easy it is to make and how many different uses there are for it. The Momma Beach Bag Crochet Pattern is one that you can use again and again.

Ditch those ugly bags you take with you to the grocery store and use this one instead. Your apples and bananas have never looked cuter nestled in this adorable bag. We love taking it with us on errands or to the beach.

It’s stretchy so you can work with objects of any shape and size, and they’ll fit right into the bag. Tie it all together with a string of the same color as the body of the bag, or get funky with it and choose a contrasting color.

The PDF version of this pattern has answers to all the questions you could possibly have about this bag – and more than that. You’ll be able to master the stitches, use a magic ring, tie it all together, and have a great bag ready to go.

Finish off and weave in ends

Cut about 25 4 foot strands of yarn and braid together to make a drawstring. Weave through round 48 and tie together.  When making my drawstring I ran out of sport weight yarn. So I added some pretty green cotton yarn to make my braid fatter. I actually wish I would have made it a little fatter and shorter to make it easier to carry. Make the length and width that you feel most comfortable with.

Where will you wear your bag? We want to know what kind of adventures you’re going on. The Momma Beach Bag Crochet Pattern is one to be shared, and we’re asking that’s just what you do.

If you took it on some place exciting – or maybe even just to the park on a picnic – snap a pic and share it with us. Then move on to your next crocheting project, because once you’ve been bitten by the DIY bug, we know just how hard it is to stop.

I designed the Minty Mandala Purse for me! As much as I love to crochet projects and patterns, I rarely make anything for myself.

My Fat Bottom Bag has been through a lot, and needed to be replaced.  I wanted something with a fun Bohemian style. Enjoy your new free crochet pattern!

You know what else I love about this pattern? Most of the pattern is made using just a simple rectangle. There are so many crochet patterns you can make with just rectangles. I show you how in my Crocheting Anything with Rectangles course. Check it out here.

Double Lining – By KatiDCreations

I rotated with two colors on the vertical strips. I used the variegated “fruit punch”  and  a maroon.

Do not finish off your last vertical strip.

Joining the top of the strips to form your bag

Round 1: CH 1, turn. SC into each of the 9 SC of the strip, then continuing straight to the next strip. You will SC into each SC around. Join to first SC. (90 SC)

Time to get the weaving strips worked up!
I rotated my weaving strips with orange and blue Redheart with Love.
Make a total of 6 strips.

Row 1: CH 7, skip 1 CH, and SC into the next 6 CH. (6 SC)
Row 2: CH 1, turn. SC into each stitch across. (6 SC)

For weaving strip # 1 you will repeat row 2 until you have a total of 130 rows.  Leaving long yarn end, finish off.
Weaving strip #2 will have 120 rows.
Weaving strip #3 will have 110 rows
Weaving strip # 4 will have 100 rows.
Weaving strip # 5 will have 95 rows.
Weaving strip # 6 will have 90 rows.

Weave in your strips starting with the longest to the shortest- and weaving them from the bottom of the bag up. Using yarn end from strip and yarn needle, join both ends of each strip together as you finish weaving them.

Crocheting your Bag Strap

With any of your colors, CH 24. Slip stitch to first CH.
Round 1-60: CH 1. HDC into each stitch around. Join to first HDC.

Once you are finished, attach the strap to both sides of the top of the bag. Before doing this, lay your bag flat to know exactly which parts are the sides.

Now, make your bag lining using your favorite technique. I linked three tutorials for lining at the top of this post.

Fat Bottom Bag – Free Crochet Pattern Review

Fat- Bottom Bag Free Crochet Pattern -Review-

I am so excited to share this free crochet pattern with you!

The “Fat Bottom Bag” is designed by Dearest Debi. Last week I was browsing through her free patterns when I discovered this stunning and PERFECT free purse pattern.

The stitches are so much fun and prevent you from getting bored with the project. But my favorite thing (by far) about this pattern is the way it comes together. I have never made anything like this. It kept me guessing through the entire process.. and just when I was almost finished- it all made perfect sense and came together so beautifully!

I highly recommend this pattern to anyone who is wanting to make a new purse! The purse I have been using for the last year from my own free pattern was starting to get a little ragged. Between its daily use, getting pooped on by a bird, and my keys always poking through it… I was starting to be embarrassed to carry it around with me… not that the design was bad… but it was definitely used until it was ragged.

I did do the top differently but only because when I got to that point, I knew I was crocheting my handles… and I wasn't near my computer to see the pattern.

The only thing about this purse that has caused me to get frustrated, is my daughter fighting me over it! I told her she could have my old purse but she says it's “not good enough”. Thanks a lot Ella 😉

You can get the free crochet pattern -> HERE!<-

Drawstring Backpack to Care-A-Lot

March 4, 2014 By stitch11 8 Comments

Free Drawsting Backpack Crochet Pattern

I am so excited- my daughter loves Care Bears as much as I did when I was her age…. and even loves watching the same movie over and over that I used to torture my older sisters with!

This pattern was inspired by my daughters imagination. About a month ago, she started playing with invisible Care Bears. Every time we would leave the house, she would make sure that my husband and I put all the (pretend) Care Bears in our pockets. If we told her there wasn't room in our pockets, she would put on her invisible backpack and ask us to help her put the bears in it.

It only took a few days of this to realize we needed to find her some real Care Bears. We searched many stores before I realized the only way I would be able to find them would be to order them online.   You can buy them at Amazon if you are searching for them too. 🙂

Ever since the bears arrived at my house, my daughter has been playing with them all day-every day….”You wanna play Care-A-Lot” is the every 5 minute question. But, she still needed a backpack 🙂 So here it is, a free crochet pattern for the Drawstring Backpack to Care-A-Lot. I hope someone you know will get as much enjoyment out of this as my daughter.

Free Crochet Stitch11 Purse Pattern

Free Crochet Purse Pattern

I created this beautiful Stitch11 purple purse using my free pattern from an earlier post “Stitch11 Crochet Purse.”  I used Red Heart with Love yarn and the only changes I made were adding an extra four rows to the strap, and using a Foundation Chain for the button strap instead of the basic Chain. I love my purse and I use it daily!! Sharing the love <3

Stitch11 Crochet Purse

Stitch11 Crochet Purse - Free Pattern

For the last year I have attempted to make myself a purse multiple times… I have not been happy with any crochet purse until now!! I love this little bag so much. It's perfect for me! The strap is shorter because I have had problems while carrying my toddler through parking lots and my purse strap falling from my shoulder to my elbow causing the purse to drag by my ankles. o.O not ok! I also made the bag part of the purse a little smaller BUT I can still fit my wallet, keys, glasses, pack of wipes, and a few diapers into it! Its perfect for the someone like me who only carries what I need and doesn't like to carry a tote around when you already have a 35 lb toddler on your hip. Happy Hookin!

Beach Bag for Momma

June 21, 2012 By stitch11 38 Comments

After popular demand I decided to write out a free pattern for this beautiful beach bag I designed for my mom.  I tested this out when taking a trip to Altoona, PA. I was able to put 3 beach towels, diapers, wipes, sun screen, Tylenol, 3 changes of clothes for my daughter, a small blanket, and I still had more stretching room.

~On The Go~ Makeup Bag

June 10, 2012 By stitch11 3 Comments

I was long over due for a new ~on the go~ make up bag. When designing this free pattern, I wanted to create something secure. I wanted to be able to throw my makeup bag into the back seat of the car without fearing my makeup would fly out all directions. With success, this bag is so strong, and secure. Its the perfect size for all your  makeup tools for ladies on the go. I put all the items I use daily in it and I still had plenty room to spare.

Fun With Plarn

April 25, 2012 By stitch11 2 Comments

Earlier this week I decided to cut a plastic table cloth into plarn.  I basically did what Creative Jewish Mom did with her sheets but without the ripping.  While cutting my plarn I was brainstorming for ideas of what I could use it for other than the basic idea of a shopping bag.  My first thought was a head band, but that wouldn't be very comfy. So then I am thinking… hmmm, maybe a plastic bag dispenser… but I really love the way my plastic bag dispensers turned out made from regular yarn.  So then I am looking on the web and around the house.. hmmm, what would be good made from plastic. a frisbee? Maybe?!  Then I realized how great a ninja star would fly if it were plastic. So that is what I did 🙂  Plarntastic!! Its not as safe and pain free, when getting hit in the face, as the acrylic ninja star. But it floats! This will always be packed in our beach bag!
