Circular vests or shrugs are perfect garments to make and wear throughout the year. They look a little fancier than garments worked as rectangles or squares, but are still pretty easy to make.

What is a Circle Vest or Shrug?

A circle vest is just a vest that is worked from the center of the back out in rounds. They often include a mandala or lacy motif on the back, but not always.

Holes are left for the arms, which can be left open to make a vest, or you can stitch on sleeves to make a shrug or cardigan. The edge of the circle makes a sort of collar on the front of the vest.

This kind of pattern is a lot of fun to stitch, and you can easily customize a circle vest because you can just keep adding rounds if you need a bigger diameter to your circle.

Materials for Making a Circle Vest

You don’t need a lot of supplies to get started making circle vests, but one thing you’ll want to consider before you get started is the yarn.

Many circle vests are worked in multicolored, self-striping yarns like Lion Brand Mandala or Caron Cakes, because the color changes emphasize the pattern and make it look more dramatic without any extra work on your part.

Of course you can work any of these patterns in a solid color yarn, or make your own color changes with yarn from your stash, but it’s worth looking at the suggested yarn for the pattern you want to make and considering how different it would look if you didn’t use the same colorful yarn.

In addition to yarn, you’ll need a crochet hook in the size recommended in the pattern, or whatever you need to get gauge. These vests generally will fit a range of sizes, but if you want yours to fit as expected, make sure you have the same number of stitches per inch as the designer, or adjust your hook size until you do.

What makes a pattern a shrug instead of a vest? Usually in the case of circle shrugs, the circle is made large enough that it can be folded and finished to have sleeves that are part of the main piece. Bralettes are fantastic to wear during summer. Bralettes are easy to wear and much easier to crochet. If you haven’t crocheted any bralettes yet, this post is for you. Here’s how to make a crochet bralette.

How to Crochet a Beginner-Friendly Bralette

There are a few basic steps that go into crocheting a bralette, though exactly how it’s put together may vary from pattern to pattern.

Generally you will begin by stitching the base, or the band that goes under the breasts, which is typically worked flat. Then you would stitch the cups, usually one at a time. They can be stitched onto the band you’ve already crocheted so you don’t have to sew them on later.

Finally you would work the straps. Some patterns have you work the cups first and then add the band, but generally these are the three parts of any bralette crochet pattern you will need to work.

If you wanted to know more specifically how to make a crochet bralette without following one of the patterns below, you’d need to measure around your chest under your bust where the band will hit. The band is often worked sideways so you can wrap it around your body as you go until you have a snug fit.

Consult a pattern below for how to shape the cups, which you can also hold up to your body as you go to ensure good coverage.

Straps can be anything from crochet straps with the same stitch pattern as the band to long chains that tie around the neck or braid into the back of the bralette. Can a Beginner Crochet a Bralette?

Of course! Anyone can crochet a bralette, even if they’re new to crocheting. Choose a pattern using basic crochet stitches (like sc, hdc, or dc) and you’ll be fine. You do need to pay attention to your gauge and proper measuring to ensure your bralette will fit, but the skills needed are not difficult.

Supplies Needed to Crochet a Bralette

When you are getting ready to crochet a bralette, you first need to consider the yarn you want to use. Cotton yarn is a popular choice for bras because it is breathable and good for warm weather, but it can stretch and may not hold its shape through wear. Cotton yarn is not always soft, so it might not be comfortable against the skin.

Wool and acrylic yarns, as well as blends with either, are generally warmer but also will hold up to stretching better. There are both wool and acrylic options that are comfortable to wear against the skin, but check the care instructions if you need your tops to be machine washable.

The patterns below will give you guidance as to the best yarn to use to complete them.

You’ll also need a crochet hook in the size called for in the pattern or whatever you need to get the correct gauge. Because a bralette really needs to fit well, taking the time to check your gauge and to measure as you go is very important.

Speaking of measuring, a flexible tape measure will be needed both to measure your body and you bralette as you work. You’ll also need a yarn needle (aka tapestry needle) for sewing pieces together and weaving in ends, and scissors for trimming your excess yarn. If your bra cups are worked in the round, a stitch marker will be helpful for marking the end of the round.

Materials Needed to Crochet Dinosaurs

Just like most other crochet projects, you don’t need a lot of materials or supplies to make crochet dinosaur projects.

Because a lot of these projects are meant to be used by children, you’ll want to choose a yarn that’s soft and easy to care for in the yarn weight suggested in the pattern.

You’ll also need a crochet hook of the size called for in the pattern or what you need to get the same number of stitches per inch as the pattern calls for. Note that amigurumi patterns often use a smaller hook that the yarn label might call for to make the stitches tighter so the stuffing won’t show through.

Lacy crochet scarf patterns are a step up in skill level from scarves using basic stitch patterns, but they’re a great way to learn more intricate stitches and add a handmade touch to your wardrobe any time of year.

Lace scarves usually have a repeating stitch pattern, so as soon as you learn the basics it’s simple to repeat that design as long as you want for your scarf. And many of these stitches are just variations on the basic crochet stitches, so they shouldn’t be too much of a challenge!

How Do You Crochet a Lace Scarf?

Lace scarves, like any other crocheted scarf, are typically rectangles and can be worked from the top down (meaning from one short side to the other) or from side to side, using a long chain that is the same length as your scarf.

Lacy crochet scarf patterns often use one or several repeating stitch patterns to make the design, so make sure you’re comfortable with all the techniques before you get started.

How Long is the Average Crochet Scarf?

Crocheted scarves can be made to any length you like. Sometimes lacy crochet scarves are shorter than you might make a winter scarf because they are worn more as an accessory than something to keep you warm.

In general, though, scarves are worked to about the length that the recipient is tall. When working a scarf from a short end, you can easily alter the pattern to make it shorter or longer based on who you are giving it to and how it will be worn.

Just keep in mind the pattern repeat and make sure you’ve completed a full repeat of the pattern if it is more than one row before you finish off your work.

Materials for Lacy Crochet Scarf Patterns

The most important consideration when making a lacy crochet scarf is what yarn you want to use. Typically lighter weight yarns are used for lace scarves (up to a 4, worsted weight) and sometimes a larger hook is used that would typically be called for with that weight of yarn to emphasize the openness of the stitches.

You don’t necessarily need to check gauge when working a scarf pattern, because if your scarf comes out a slightly different size it’s not a big deal. But if you want to make a swatch so you can practice and make sure you understand all the pattern abbreviations and techniques, that can be helpful.

When it comes to fiber content, any fiber you like can be used to crochet a lace scarf, from cotton to acrylic, wool and blends. Since scarves tend to touch the skin you’ll want to use something that is soft to touch.

In addition to yarn and the size crochet hook called for in the pattern, you’ll also need:

Scissors for trimming yarn ends
Yarn needle or tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Stitch markers can also be handy if your pattern has different lace sections in the same row

What’s the Difference Between a Pocket Scarf and Pocket Shawl?

How Long Should a Pocket Scarf Be?

In general, scarves are worked to about the same length as the wearer is tall (or measured from fingertip to fingertip with arms spread in a T from the body. Because the scarf needs to be long enough for the person’s hands to fit in the pockets, it’s important to measure if you can.

If you plan to wear the scarf wrapped around the neck, account for that when you measure.

The width of a pocket scarf can vary but needs to be at least wide enough for hands to fit comfortably in the pockets.

Shawl designs can vary greatly in terms of shape, size, and stitches used. There are free patterns that are perfect for beginners as well as those that require more experience with different techniques. Let’s dive in and explore the world of crochet shawls!

Supplies You Need to Crochet Shawls

As with most types of crochet projects, you don’t need a lot of supplies to get started crocheting shawls.

Yarn

A shawl can be crocheted using various fibers and yarn weights. If you’re working from a pattern it will tell you both the yarn weight and the fiber content the designer used.

It’s important to stick to the same yarn weight if you want your shawl to come out about the same size as the designer intended. If you use lighter weight yarn, your project will be smaller, or if you use heavier yarn it will be larger if you don’t adjust your stitch count.

Paying attention to the fiber used is important but not as vital. Still, the yarn chosen might have particular qualities the designer was looking for in their project, so whenever possible it’s nice to use the same fiber (though it’s not necessary to use the exact same yarn if it’s not available to you).

Crochet Hook

If you are working from a published crochet shawl pattern, you’ll want to use the size crochet hook called for in the pattern.

You can check your gauge to make sure you’re getting the same number of stitches per inch as the designer and adjust if necessary. Since shawls don’t have to be an exact size, if you like the look of the stitches with the yarn and hook you are using it’s fine if you don’t have the exact gauge, just be aware your project might be a little bigger or smaller than the pattern states.

If you are designing your own shawl and have chosen the yarn you want to use, check the label for the recommended crochet hook size. You can adjust as needed to get the look and feel for the fabric you want, but that’s a good starting point.

With Color A, ch 23.

Round 1: 3 dc into the 4th ch from the hook (3 skipped chs count as first dc). Dc into the next 18 sts; 7 dc into the last ch. You will now be working down the other side of the chain. Dc into the next 18 sts, dc 3 times into the same space where you worked the first 3 dc. Sl st into the top of the first dc. – 50 sts

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc into the same st. 2 dc into each of the next 2 sts, then hdc into the following 6 sts. Sc into the next 13 sts, then 2 hdc into each of the next 6 sts. Sc into the next 13 sts, then hdc into the next 6 sts. 2 dc

into each of the last 3 sts. Sl st into the top of the first dc. – 62 sts

Round 3: Ch 3, dc into the same st. [1 dc into the next st, 2 dc into the next st] 2 times. Hdc into the next 7 sts, sc into the next 14 sts. 2 sc into the next st. Tongue: (Make 2)

Ch 3 counts as a dc

Ch 5, sl st into beginning ch to form a ring.

Row 1: Ch 3, dc 6 times into the center of the circle, turn – 7 sts

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first st. 2 dc into each st, turn – 14 sts

Row 3: Ch 3, dc into first st, 1 dc into next st. *2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next st; repeat from * to end, turn. – 21 sts

Ch 1 does not count as a stitch

Row 4: Ch 1. You will now be working down the flat edge of the semi circle. Sc 12 times across. – 12 sts

Row 5-15: Ch 1, turn. Sc into each st across.

Cut yarn and tie off leaving a long tail to sew the tongue onto the top of the slipper. Pin the tongue into place at the front of the slipper and sew on using a tapestry needle.

Pom Poms

Wrap color B around 2 fingers approx 20 times. Cut a long piece of yarn and tie through the middle, trim ends. Attach 3 pom poms across the top of the tongue at approx row 7. Tie in all ends.

These pom pom slippers are easy to make and cozy to wear. They’ll be something to look forward to at the end of every day, and you’ll get the added pleasure of knowing you made them yourself.

It can be a challenge to stay warm in the winter, especially when gloves make it hard to use our phones and function. That’s why I love crochet fingerless gloves. They’re what people used before texting gloves, and they’re just as good. This particular pair uses the lemon peel stitch.

They have a little hole for your thumbs and a ribbed cuff around the bottom. Made as a rectangle and folded and seamed together, these gloves are incredibly easy to crochet. Cuff

Ch 13.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (12 sts)

Rows 2-20 [2-24, 2-28]: Ch 1, sc in blo of each st across, turn.

Hand

Row 1: Rotate to work into sides of rows, sc in side of each row across cuff portion, turn. (20 [24, 28] sts)

Rows 2-11: Ch 1, [sc in next st, dc in next st] across, turn.

Fasten off.

Fold glove in half widthwise. Starting from bottom of cuff, whipstitch sides together for about 3.5”. Leave a 1.5” opening for thumb, then continue whipstitching sides together to the top. This is now the wrong side of the glove. Turn glove right side out.

Repeat instructions for second glove.

Mixed Stripe Mittens Crochet Pattern

I recently went on a trip and got to experience my first snow of this year!

I don’t know about you but I always find the first snow of the year to be full of whimsy and nostalgia. I felt like a little kid again, running around, catching snowflakes on my tongue.

Every year, I pledge to make one snowman. It’s a tradition for me, and you know how important those are to me. And everyone knows you need a good pair of gloves to build a good snowman.

Introducing the perfect striped crochet mittens.

I brought these striped mittens along on the trip with me and thank goodness I did. They were perfect for outdoor adventures in the snow. They’re made out of an acrylic wool blend, so they’re soft but really durable. Just what I need for playing around in the snow.

Not only are these crochet gloves practical, but they’re cute too. The base of the mittens is gray with pink tips at the top. Then, there’s a little white stripe under the pink, with a bit of gray separating the colors.

It’s a really basic design because they’re worked in single crochet all over. So if you’re going on a trip soon, you can work these up just in time.

I love how warm and durable these mittens are. And they’re really stylish. I think everyone should have a pair, yourself included!

Winter will be here soon, and I’ve got just the thing.

If you’re looking for something to grab on your way out the door, the Warm Winter Cowl is perfect.

It will keep you warm and cozy outside in the cold. But it’s small enough to throw in your purse once you’re inside. No unnecessary bulk like with some scarves.

The best part about this cowl is the decorative puff stitch. It’s easy to get the hang of and looks beautiful whenever it’s used. It’s made out of plymouth encore yarn that’s an acrylic wool blend. It’s durable and soft making it perfect for this plushy cowl.

It’s simple and fun, and perfect for cold weather.

This crochet hat is perfect for so many reasons. It’s made using a beautiful daisy stitch with a pom pom on top. And it has a ribbed trim around the bottom which makes it nice and stretchy to help fit any sized head. Ch 13.

Turn and rotate the ribbed cuff portion you’ve completed. You’ll now start working across the long side of the ribbing.

Upper Hat

Row 1: Sc into the end of each row across – 89 sc

Row 2: Make a beginning star st, work star sts across, hdc in last st (same st as the last loop of the last star). 44 star sts

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st. sc in the eye of the first star st. 2 sc in the eye of each star st across, sc in the last st – 89 sts

Rows 4-19: Repeat Rows 2 and 3

Fold hat in half, right side facing in, and sew together from ribbing to top of beanie. Turn hat right side out. Cut a 24” piece of yarn. Using the needle with the yarn in it, weave the yarn in and out of the top edge of the hat all the way around (every few stitches) until you’re around the entire top. Cinch the two ends of the yarn together so that the top edge of the hat all comes together. When you’ve got it pulled as tight as you can, knot the yarn together and weave the yarn ends into the hat.

Pom Pom
Wrap yarn around a 7” piece of cardboard 70 times. Tie a piece of yarn tightly around the middle. Trim sides of pom pom to liking and attach at the top of the hat. Weave in all ends.

Tassel (Make 4)

Cut two 18-inch pieces of B and set aside.

Wrap B around cardboard square 75 times.

Slide one 18-inch piece of B under wraps and tie in a knot at one end of the cardboard. Remove cardboard.

Tie the other 18-inch piece of B around entire tassel, about 1-inch down from the first tie. Pull the ends of this tie down into the tassel.

Holding the ends of the top tie separate, trim the tassel ends evenly.

Use the top tie ends to attach the tassel to one corner of the blanket.

Weave in any remaining ends.

Pom pom tassels (make 2 per slipper)

Ch 50 and tie off, weave through mid section of cuff. To make pom pom, wrap yarn around 3 fingers several times and cut. Tie a piece of yarn in the center of the pom pom and double knot tightly. Trim pom pom to liking, leaving the tail of yarn tied through the center. Pull 1 strand of yarn through the last ch and tie tightly, Trim ends to blend in.

Sew in all ends with a tapestry needle.

Cold weather is just around the corner, and these socks are perfect for keeping toes warm. With the super soft yarn, the pattern calls for, you’ll be prepped for dropping temps in no time.

Join rnds where indicated with a sl st in the first st of the rnd

Pillow Panel (Make 2)

With A, make a magic circle.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, 10 hdc in magic circle, close magic circle, join. (10 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st, [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, place st marker in last st made] around, join. (15 hdc, 4 markers placed)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st, [hdc in each st across to next marker, 2 hdc in marked st, move marker to last st made] 4 times, hdc in each remaining st, join. (20 hdc)

Every repeat of rnd 3 adds 5 more hdc to the stitch count.

Rnds 4-7: Repeat rnd 3, change to B at end of last rnd. (40 hdc)

Work should now measure 3 inches in diameter.

Rnds 8-9: With B, repeat rnd 3, change to A at end of last rnd. (50 hdc)

Rnds 10-13: With A, repeat rnd 3, change to B at end of last rnd. (70 hdc)

Rnds 14-31: Repeat rnds 8-13 3 times, do not change colors at the end of rnd 31. (160 hdc) Fasten off

Remove all markers.

Weave in all ends.

Pom Poms (Make 8)

Make pom poms using a pom pom maker OR

Cut a 12-inch length of B and set aside – this is your yarn tie.

Wrap B around cardboard about 300 times.

Using a hook or needle, slide the 12-inch yarn tie underneath the wraps on one end of the cardboard. Tie in a tight knot around the wraps.

Keeping the ends of the yarn tie clear, cut wraps directly opposite the knot. Sew each end of the yarn tie back and forth through the knot several times but do not trim the ends.

Assembly:

Place pillow panels with RS together.

Whipstitch panels together around the edge, leaving a 6-inch opening.

Turn pillow RS out and insert pillow form or stuffing.

Sew the opening closed.

Evenly space pom poms along the seam. Use long tails to sew in place.

Weave in any remaining ends.

It’s so easy to get caught up in making projects for the little ones we love. But oftentimes we forget to do something nice for ourselves too.

And that’s why we created this free crochet pattern, the cozy fall headband crochet project! There’s no reason for you to miss out on the fun with these simple and stylish accessories. (It is sized for both toddlers and adults if you decide to make some for someone other than yourself.)

The Cozy Fall Headband requires no special stitch, and is worked using single and double crochet stitches. And it’s crocheted as one long piece that can be tied and untied each time you wear it. That way it’s sure to fit you and your little one.

The knot at the top is a cute way to style this headband, but if you want a simple headband look you can twist it so that the knot is behind your hair.

It’s made out of 100% wool, machine washable yarn. And because of its soft texture, you get a beautiful warm accessory without any irritation. FSC 46

Ch 2 counts as a HDC

Row 1: Ch 2, turn. *Skip 1 stitch, dc into the following stitch. Cross in front of the dc and puff stitch into the previous skipped stitch; repeat from * across. Hdc into the last st. – 22 puff sts, 2 hdc

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Dc into the next st; cross in front of the dc and puff stitch into the space between the puff stitch from the previous row and the ch 2. *Dc into the top of the next puff st

(you will find this by skipping 2 sts), cross in front of the dc and puff stitch in the gap between puff stitches behind dc; repeat from * across. Hdc in turning chain. – 22 puff sts, 2 hdc

Row 3-4: Repeat rows 1 and 2. – 22 puff sts, 2 hdc

Cut yarn and tie off, attach color B

Color B:

Row 5-8: Repeat rows 1 – 4. – 22 puff sts, 2 hdc

Cut yarn and tie off, attach color C

Row 9-12: Repeat rows 1 – 4. – 22 puff sts, 2 hdc

Cut yarn and tie off, attach color A

Ch 1 is turning ch only, does not count as a sc

Row 13-51: Ch 1, turn. Sc into each st across. – 67 sts

Cut yarn and tie off

Repeat pattern to make the other side of the bag. Whip stitch together along the sides and bottom; turn project right side out.

Handles

Color A

Count 12 sts on either side of the bag, attach yarn on 13th st

Ch 1 does not count as a stitch

Row 1: Sc into each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat row 1 until handle is 28” long. Cut yarn and tie off; count 12 sts from the other side of the bag and whip stitch on to the next 3 sts; repeat for the other side. Sc around the handles and top of bag.

Fringe

Cut 3 strands of yarn approx 12” each. Fold yarn in half and use your crochet hook to pull top of fringe through top of sc. Pull ends of yarn through and pull tight to create a knot. Repeat around the top of the bag, placing fringe every 3 sts. Trim ends 5.5”.

Sew in all ends

Bag

With A, ch 3

Rnd 1: 16 tr in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in top of first tr. (16 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 4 (counts as tr throughout), tr in first st, 2 tr in each st around, join with sl st to first st. (32 sts) Rnd 3: Ch 4, 2 tr in next st, [tr in next st, 2 tr in next st] around, join with sl st in first st. (48 sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 4, tr in next st, 2 tr in next st, [tr in each of next 2 sts, 2 tr in next st] around, join with sl st in first st. (64 sts)

Rnd 5: Ch 4, tr in each of next 2 sts, 2 tr in next st, [tr in each of next 3 sts, 2 tr in next st] around, join with sl st in first st. (80 sts).
