Beach Bag for Momma

June 21, 2012 By Corina 38 Comments

After popular demand I decided to write out a free pattern for this beautiful beach bag I designed for my mom.  I tested this out when taking a trip to Altoona, PA. I was able to put 3 beach towels, diapers, wipes, sun screen, Tylenol, 3 changes of clothes for my daughter, a small blanket, and I still had more stretching room.

Beach-BAG

Supplies:

5mm hook

“Sinfonia” sport weight, cotton yarn, two 3.5 ounce skeins. ( I bought this yarn at hobby lobby. If you dont have a hobby lobby near you, you might be able to find a great deal for some on Ebay
~I added a small amount of peaches and creme 4 ply to the drawstring because I ran out of Sinfonia (I had used a small amount from my Sinfonia skeins on an earlier project)

Abbreviations:
CH – Chain
HDC – Half Double Crochet
SC – single Crochet

Instructions:

(CH 2 does not count as HDC)

Round 1: Chain 2,  16 HDC inside of magic ring, Connect to top of chain 2

Round 2: CH 2,  2 HDC in each HDC around, Connect to top of CH 2

Round 9: CH 2,  *2 HDC in first HDC, 1 HDC in next 7 HDC* repeat around, Connect to top of CH 2

Round 10: CH 2,  *2 HDC in first HDC, 1 HDC in next 8 HDC* repeat around, Connect to top of CH 2

Round 11: CH 2,  *2 HDC in first HDC, 1 HDC in next 9 HDC* repeat around, Connect to top of CH 2

Round 12: CH 2,  *2 HDC in first HDC, 1 HDC in next 10 HDC* repeat around, Connect to top of CH 2

Round 13: CH 2,  *2 HDC in first HDC, 1 HDC in next 11 HDC* repeat around, Connect to top of CH 2

Round 14: CH 2,  *2 HDC in first HDC, 1 HDC in next 12 HDC* repeat around, Connect to top of CH 2

Round 16-18: CH 2, HDC around, Connect to top of CH 2

Round 19: CH 1, SC in same stitch, *CH 2, Skip 2 stitches, SC in next stitch, repeat from * Around and Slip stitch into first SC

*Now working in a continuous rounds*

for Rounds 20-46: Slip stitch into first CH 2 Space,  SC in same space, *CH 2, Skip 2 stitches, SC in next CH 2 space, repeat from * Around Slip stitch into first SC of Round 46

*Working in single rounds*

Round 47-49: Slip stitch into first CH 2 space. CH 2, 2 HDC in same space. * 3 HDC in next CH 2 space, repeat from * around, Join into top of CH 2.

Slip stitch into the space between the first two groups of 3 HDC, do 3 HDC into the center HDC of the next group of 3 HDC. *Slip stitch into the next space. 3 HDC into the next center HDC, Repeat from * around. Join to first slip stitch.

Finish off and weave in ends

Cut about 25 4 foot strands of yarn and braid together to make drawstring. Weave through round 48 and tie together.  When making my drawstring I ran out of sport weight yarn. So I added some  pretty green cotton yarn to make my braid fatter. I actually wish I would have made it a little fatter and shorter to make it easier to carry. Make the length and width that you feel most comfortable with. 🙂 Enjoy your YARNTASTIC beach bag designed by your very own Stitch11 🙂

I love the beach bag you made!! It is unreal how much I can fit inside of it. It just keeps expanding! But it never stretches out! Thank you!

I am working on this bag right now!! 🙂 I love it! Can’t wait for it to be done! 🙂 I wanted to ask a question, I am on the 4th round, and it seems to be getting a little curly, is it supposed to curl up or not, I already started over one Time cause it was getting curly so I started again and tried not doing it too tight.. Advice? Thanks:)

Hmm, I don’t really remember mine getting curly. Make sure you are not counting your ch as a stitch. There is a seam on the bottom of the bag. If you would like, you can send me a picture on my facebook page so I can see if I did something different.

Okay, but I don’t understand how I am going to be able to weave the drawstring through round 48..? On round 47, was I supposed to HDC through and actual stitch or just through the whole chain 2 space?

You will have 3 rows of what looks like little granny square knots 47-49. When you are weaving the drawstring you will weave over and under the granny square knots of row 48. 🙂 I hope I am helping you some. I didn’t get much sleep last night so I am not sure if I am making any sense.

I wish I had a visual! Its hard for me to do it without pictures.. So do chain 2 after each set of 3 HDC?

No. Just do exactly what the pattern calls for. Your sets of 3 HDC will go in between the the previous rows sets of 3 HDC.

Hahahahah! Don’t be sorry! I am exactly the same way when I follow patterns…. sometimes it seems I just really want to do my own thing. But it always makes sense if I just make myself follow the pattern exactly.. even if I have to read it 30 times to understand what I need to be doing. Im so glad you got it! I would LOVE to see a picture!!

Absolutely LOVE the bag! I was looking for a drawstring bag to keep my clothes pins in so I thought, well it says beach bag, but its’s just what I need. Its perfect! I’m going to make more as this is really versatile! Would be great for daughter’s PE kit in school!
Thanks so much for posting it!

    Corina,

Thank you sooooo much for all the free patterns. I can’t wait to make this. I made your princess crown hat with blond braids and the little girl loved it!! I’m making another for another little gal and the infant size crown hat for her new baby sister who will be here in May. I’m sure I will be making more of your patterns in the future!

And, thank you for the clean print!! Love that feature also.

what if i were to use worsted weight yarn with this project? i don’t want it to come out too big.

Worsted would work but you may want to adjust it to be a little smaller. Using a lighter medium weight would be more ideal. The sport weight I used reminds me of the thickness of Simply Soft more than Redhearts.

i’m using worsted weight but i’m using a 4.25mm hook instead of 5mm. i’m hoping it won’t come out too big. do you have any measurements for your bag?

If I am using worsted weight yarn from red heart what size hook should I use and how many stitches should I start out with, for some reason it keeps getting wavy 🙁

I used sport weight. I wouldn’t know for sure what size to use with that yarn without making one.

I started with 13 hdc into the circle, then did an extra 3 rows of hdc before I did the main part of the bag. I’ll let you know how it turns out

I am trying to make this beach bag for my son’s girlfriend and I am not sure if I am supposed to slip every other open space or not. When I don’t skip them it ruffles and when I do skip them it turns in like a tire tube. Thank you very much.

Peaches and creme works up a lot thicker than sport weight. You could use it, but you will want to adjust the stitches so the bottom of the bag doesn’t become wavy.

Yeah, that is a lot thicker than sport weight. If you can, just make the bottom of the bag a flat circle, and try not to think about the stitch count of the pattern.. the sides are pretty basic, so once you get the bottom the size you want, come back to the pattern.

After you make the magic circle and you do the rounds of hdc is there suppose to be a big hole where the circle was

No, once you pull the magic circle tight there shouldn’t be a big hole. Not if you are using sport weight yarn.
