Creepy Skull Slouch – Pattern Review

October 2, 2014 By Corina 13 Comments

Crochet Skull Hat Pattern

I stumbled upon this amazing Skull Hat pattern by Spider Mambo Designs. You can get the pattern HERE. Be sure to check out her Facebook page HERE too!

I want to start off by letting you know how much I am amazed by this design. I would never have been able to figure out how to make skulls like this.. and Spider Mambo makes it EASY!!!!

I did make a few changes… only to my personal liking. I did not find any reasons to HAVE to make changes. You can follow the pattern to exact and it turn out amazing!  I will say, the size small is more like child size.. but my head is small so I made it into an adult beanie instead of slouch.  If you are wanting the teen-adult slouch, definitely make the size large.
What changes did I make?
-I  started off the Creepy Skull pattern with  a FSC instead of the basic CH.
– I then did a round of FPSC before continuing with the DC directed in the pattern. I do this because I love the snug and stretchy fit that the FSC and FPSC together make.
– After round 14, I decided to go ahead and skip the next few rounds to close the hat a little earlier than the pattern calls for. This makes the size small more beanie than slouchy for my own head.  Doing this, I did the 4 SC like the pattern calls for on round 15. Just not the chains. Then, I finished it off with a long end and wove it back and forth around the stitches, pulled tight to close and wove in my ends.
– I decided to line my hat using fleece from sweatpants that my daughter had outgrown. I followed this awesome tutorial by Playin' Hooky Designs!
– I also added a pom pom using my Secure Pom Pom Tutorial.

Very cute! pompoms on a creepy skull hat….to make a beanie instead of a hat, I just make two repeats of the skull before I do the decrease row. Thanks for the review Spider Mambo Designs

I find that 84 chains is way to many for a child, it’s even to large for large beanie. I’m using sport weight yarn and a 4.00 hook, I crochet tight, and it’s still too big.

The pattern is written beautifully, I just think that chaining 84 is way too many chains.

I completely agree, Mary! I chained 68 (a multiple of 4) instead. It fits my head.

Yeah, I had to use 77 stitches from ear warmer and its working as well. Pattern is way confusing and clutter. It needed to be organize for each pattern for each item.

I’m having such trouble with the hat after the row of the Teeth. Your hat looks fabulous. Is there are tutorial that might help me through the first row of skulls or at least the first Skull and how it’s done? Thank you…

I would msg the person who wrote the pattern. She may have some photos that can help you.

Mambo’s patterns are full of errors. The shorts pattern I got was totally useless and a waste of money but it was cheap so I just didn’t say anything. She has also burned quite a few designers on Ravelry.

I loved this pattern. Haven’t tried the shorts one though. I was shocked at how much easier it was to follow than the pattern appears just by looking at it.

I would say the same thing because its clutter and disorganize for each item, it need to separate and repeat them if need. I Had to cut and tape it and reprint as many as i can to separate the item and had to rewrite some of that because some was not making any sense especially round 2.

I’m currently following your idea with the fsc but I don’t know how to turn it into a ring once I’ve done the required chain length. Can you offer help? I love your colour choices too, what yarn did you use? Thank you

I started at the brim and worked my way up to the top of the hat. Once I had it the correct length, I cant remember exactly how I slightly decreased, But you can weave your yarn around the stitches at the top, pull it closed.. and then weave in y our end to secure it.
      I hope that helps!
      You CAN do it!
