Curly Q ~ Earflap Hat

November 27, 2012 By stitch11 10 Comments

While on a long over due trip to Hobby Lobby to get my yarn fix, my sister pointed out a yarn to me that is called “Curly Q.” This yarn is extremely soft. It looks delicious!!! There was no way, in my right mind, that I could have ever passed up this yummy yarn. With Christmas coming up, I have lots of family members to be making gifts for. This hat will be sure to put a smile on someones face.  I hope you get a chance to work with this yarn too. And now you even have  a pattern to use it with! 😉 This YARNTASTIC free crochet pattern is written for the teen-adult size head. Its super stretchy yarn, so it will be sure to fit all shapes and sizes!

Supplies

J/10-6.00 MM Hook
Yarn Needle (weaving in ends)
I Love this Yarn (for trim and braids)
One Skein (150 yards) of Red Heart Curly Q *Yarn with a stretch* Super Bulk  (but when keeping your tension, it works up like light-medium weight) I found this yarn at Hobby Lobby. But you can also find it at Amazon
And Crochet thread (for attaching pom poms)

Abbreviations

CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Tip: This yarn is “Super Bulky” BUT when I crochet with it, I keep my
normal tension (like with any other yarn), causing the yarn to
stretch and work up more like light medium weight yarn

Attach yarn to center of the row 11 of the ear flap. CH 20, Turn, SC up the CH. Slip stitch into the same stitch you attached the yarn into. Turn, Slip stitch  back down the same CH you just single crocheted up.. Turn, Slip stitch back up the other side of the SC. Finish off and repeat for other ear flap.

Change back to the Curly Q yarn and make two pom poms. I used a small box of crayons, wrapped the yarn around it (short ways) about 50 times each.  I used crochet thread to tie the middle of the yarn and to attach the pom poms after cutting the loops and shaping them.

What size hook are you using? It doesn’t mention a hook size….

Please share pictures! It took exactly one skein/ball of this Curly Q yarn to make this… I had just the right amount for the hat and pom poms. I have another skein/ball of it left. Not sure what I will be doing with it. I might make another one just like this.

What is the name of the color of this yarn? Patchwork or Calypso?

I wouldn’t know. I don’t have anymore of the yarn to try and find out either. Sorry. Good luck though if you give it a try!
