Introduction to Crochet Hats for Women
Crochet hats are great items to make for yourself or to give as gifts. From crocheted beanies and messy bun hats to bucket hats for a day at the beach, there’s something for every day and every mood.
Hats are also great gifts to crochet because most people have similar head sizes, so you can guess a little better on the sizing than you could for a garment. And of course, they are wonderful charity projects to donate to hospitals and cancer centers.
You can make hats with simple crochet stitches or get creative with bobbles, shells, and other fun techniques. If you don’t see a crochet hat pattern here that suits you, check out my Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library, which has 45 different stitch pattern options you can try on hats or any other project you like!
The Best Yarn for Crocheting Hats
With all the yarns available, it can be confusing to choose the yarn appropriate for making hats. But when you are making crochet hats for women, make sure to choose something light and soft that will keep you warm (if you’re crocheting winter hats).
In general, these are the types of yarns that are best for different kinds of hats. Each project below has a recommended yarn as well.
- Summer hats: cotton, raffia, cotton blends
- Winter hats: wool, alpaca, wool blends
- Bucket hats: cotton, linen
- Chemo hats: cotton, silk, bamboo, anything soft and machine washable
Many of these hats use worsted weight yarn, which is in the middle of yarn weights. Of course, your pattern may call for lighter or heavier weight yarn depending on its purpose.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Hat?
Crocheting a hat is one of the simplest projects you can do and if you are an advanced beginner, creating one can take about 30 minutes to 6 hours. This will depend on your crochet skill level, your speed at crocheting, and the type and size of the hat you are making.
Different yarns also mean different gauges, which can affect the time you spent making one. But if you are an experienced crocheter, then you can crochet a hat quickly. Simple beanies won't consume many hours even if you are a beginner crocheter.
Beanie vs. Bucket Hats
Among the crochet hats that you'll encounter, two of the most common are beanies and bucket hats. But which ones are easier to make?
Bucket hats are usually made using a single stitch type repeating around the hat, which can make them a little easier than projects that use multiple stitch patterns.
Both bucket hats and beanies may include increasing or decreasing (depending on which direction they are worked) so it’s good to have a handle on the basics before you get started. My Crochet Fundamentals workshop covers shaping, basic stitches, and lots more great information to give your crochet skills a boost.
Ultimately choosing between beanies and bucket hats has to do with your personal style and needs for your new hat. It’s fun to know how to stitch both and we’ve got plenty of options for both below.
Materials Needed for Making Crochet Hats
To crochet a hat, you need, of course, your chosen yarn and a corresponding crochet hook. You’ll also need a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors to trim off excess yarn.
You will also need a tape measure or ruler and stitch markers if you are working in the round or want to mark the beginning and end of each row.
Other notions that might be used include a faux fur pom-pom (or you can get a pom-pom maker to make your own!), or buttons.
Hat Sizes
When it comes to crochet hats, the head circumference of the person you are stitching for matters. The average size for a woman’s hat is 22 inches, but of course, this does not apply to everyone. Some teenage girls, for example, have smaller heads compared to adults and have an average size of 20-22 inches.
Adult women may range from 21-23 inches in head circumference, and it can vary depending on how thick the person’s hair is (or if they have hair).
Crochet hat patterns typically shoot for the middle of the range, and luckily hats are a little stretchy, so if you don’t have the exact head to measure or are stitching for charity the standard sizes used in patterns will probably work for you.
Now that you know what yarn to use, the size of the hat you’ll be making, and you have your materials ready, let’s start crocheting! Here are 30 crochet hat patterns for women that will surely make you excited to start your crochet project.
