Shell and Button Ear Warmer

November 3, 2013 By Corina 26 Comments

Shell and Button Crochet Ear Warmer - Free Pattern

I designed this free crochet ear warmer pattern to be used as Teen-Adult Christmas gifts.

First, I wanted to use my bulky weight yarn I found at Hobby Lobby (I Love This Bulky). It turned out so beautiful! Once it was finished, I looked over at some of the yarn next to me and realized I may be able to recreate the same colors using scraps of Red Heart Super Saver and I Love This Yarn.

Both ear warmers worked up quickly and the ideal width over the ears. This is now my “Go To” Ear Warmer pattern for either Medium or Bulky weight yarns. Eventually, I will try using double strands of  Caron Simply soft for this!

Supplies
-Your choice of Medium or Bulky weight yarn. (I used I Love This Bulky for one ear warmer and a mixture of I Love This Yarn and Red Heart Super Saver for the other.)
-2 1.5 inch buttons
– Yarn needle (for weaving in your ends and attaching the buttons)
-K/101/2 – 6.5 mm crochet hook

Stitches
FSC – Foundation Single Crochet
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Let's Get Started!
Row 1: FSC 13
Row 2: CH 1, Turn, SC into same stitch. skip 1 stitch. 3 DC into next stitch. Skip 1 stitch. SC into next stitch. **Skip 1 stitch. 3 DC into next stitch. Skip 1 stitch. SC into next stitch. Repeat from ** One more time.
Row 3: CH 3, Turn, 1 DC into same stitch. skip 1 stitch. SC into next stitch. ** Skip 1 stitch. 3 DC into next stitch. Skip 1 stitch. SC into next stitch. Repeat from ** one more time. Skip 1 stitch. 2 DC into last stitch.
****Repeat rows 2 and 3   15-17 more times or until desired length. With the Bulky weight, (I Love This Bulky) I repeated rows 2 and 3   16 times to make the adult size. With the Medium weight, (I Love This Yarn or Red Heart Super Saver) I repeated rows 2 and 3    17 more times.****

Button Loops
Row 1: CH 1, Turn, SC into same stitch. SC into the next stitch. CH 3. Skip 3 stitches. SC into next 3 stitches. CH 3. Skip 3 stitches. SC into next 2 stitches.
Row 2: CH 1, Turn, SC into same stitch. SC into the next stitch. SC into the next 3 CH. SC into next 3 stitches. SC into next 3 CH. SC into next 2 stitches.

Attach the buttons over the shells on both sides of your first Row 2.

How wide is yours? I am wondering if I should go down a hook size.

ABout 4 inches. What yarn weight are you using? I have made more and went down a hook size with smaller yarn. I believe I go by counts of 3 and add 1 when making my starting FSC.

With the medium- worsted weight I used a mix of I Love This Yarn and Red Heart.. but it was scraps. And the other one is I Love This Chunky “Morocco” from Hobby Lobby 🙂 I am going to make a few more with the same chunky tonight.

I don’t understand how this fits on the ear. Where do the buttons fasten around the ear? I have knitted for years and can’t picture this.

An Ear-warmer is like a wide hairband and you wear it similarly, except over the ears. There are button loops on one end of the ear warmer so you can button it on instead of sliding it on. It helps avoid messing up your hair while putting it on and taking it off.

It probably would. If you need to though you could shorten it a row or two.

Thanks so much for the pattern! I’ve just tried a bulky weight for the first time. Loops and Threads Mink. I love the softness and how quickly they work up.

hello, are you switching yarn colors. Or using a self striping yarn? If you are switching, when and how are you doing that. Thanks.

I did both, On some of them I used a self striping yarn and on others I changed colors at the start of a row.

This is an adorable pattern. However, in reading it over I do not see a gauge. What were the final measurements? As a beginner, I am confused how you can use different yarn weights without changing the yarn hook or the number of beginning stitches. Did you use just one strand of the worsted weight or work with 2 strands as one?
Thank you for sharing. I can’t wait to try this but not sure how to proceed because of my questions.

A gauge isn’t really needed for this. You can either trust my amount of rows for either the bulky or the one single strand of #4 weight yarn.. or you can use one of these charts to know what size for what age.. making sure to leave 1-2 inches of stretch in consideration so it is snug. https://www.google.com/search?q=head+measurement+chart+for+crochet+hats&safe=off&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS529US529&espv=2&biw=1821&bih=857&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=dPytVNf1GIn5yASzn4CoCQ&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg&dpr=0.75 It really is a simple design that is wide enough to fit really well. Let me know what you think! 😀

Thank you for this free pattern! I used a K hook and (5) bulky weight yarn and ended up with a 6″ wide ear warmer! Where did I go wrong?! I will keep trying till I get it right, I will not be defeated! haha

I love the purple one I’ve made for myself. I used slightly smaller shell buttons but I used 3. I’ve also made one in dark green for my husband and it really suits him, but he says it’s too girly.
