Snake Puppet

Who doesn't love a puppet? This fun free crochet snake puppet pattern is easy and is sure to make all children and  adults smile.

Supplies:

5 mm hook
Red, light and dark green worsted weight/ you can use cotton for a bath time puppet
2 buttons
Yarn needle

Abbreviations

CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Step 1

With light/bright green yarn
Round 1: Magic Circle, CH 3, 10 DC inside Magic circle, Connect to top of CH 3
Round 2: CH 3, 2 DC in each DC around, Connect to top of CH 3
Round 3: CH 3* 2 DC in first DC, DC in next 2 DC, repeat from * around, Connect to top of CH 3
Round 4-7: CH 3, DC in each DC around, Connect to top of CH 3
Round 8: slip stitch in next 7 stitches, CH 3,DC in next 12 stitches, CH 3, Slip stitch in next stitch, slip stitch in next 7 stitches
Finish off

Step 2

With light/bright green yarn
Round 1: Magic Circle, CH 3, 10 DC inside Magic circle, Connect to top of CH 3
Round 2: CH 3, 2 DC in each DC around, Connect to top of CH 3
Round 3: CH 3* 2 DC in first DC, DC in next 2 DC, repeat from * around, Connect to top of CH 3
Round 4-6: CH 3, DC in each DC around, Connect to top of CH 3
Round 7: slip stitch in next 7 stitches, CH 3,DC in next 12 stitches, CH 3, Slip stitch in next stitch, slip stitch in next 7 stitches
Finish off

Step 3

With light/bright green yarn
Put both pieces together on the shorter sides that have the slip stitches. Connecting both pieces with yarn on the right side into the top of both CH 3. Slip stitch into the next slip stitch of both pieces, SC together across the slip stiches. Slip stitch into the tops of CH 3s on left side.
Finish off

Step 4

With light/bright green yarn

Round 1: Join yarn at the center of the bottom up snake on the short pieces of the two like in the picture above. CH 3, DC around the outside making both pieces one. Connect to top of CH 3.
Round 2: CH 3, DC around, Connect to top of CH 3.

Change colors to dark green

Round 3-4: CH 3, DC around, Connect to top of CH 3.

Change to light/bright green yarn

Round 5-6: CH 3, DC around, Connect to top of CH 3.

Change colors to dark green

Round 7-8: CH 3, DC around, Connect to top of CH 3.

Change to light/bright green yarn

Round 9-10: CH 3, DC around, Connect to top of CH 3.

Change colors to dark green

Round 11: CH 3, DC around, Connect to top of CH 3

Round 12-13: CH 2, HDC around, Connect to stop of CH 2

Step 5

With red yarn

Row 1: CH 6, skip 3 stitches and DC in next 3 stitches
Row 2-5: Turn, CH 3, DC across
Row 6: CH 5, Slip stitch in 3rd CH from hook, SC in next 2 CH, Slip stitch in next stitch, Slip stitch in next stitch, CH 5, Slip stitch in 3rd CH from hook, SC in next 2 CH, Slip stitch in next stitch
Finish off

Using Yarn needle and red yarn, attatch the nake toung inside of the snakes mouth and stitch buttons on for eyes

    I made this last night and it is SO adorable. I made it for a 4 yr old boy with 5 other sibilings. I believe he will have a lot of fun with it. I’m pretty sure I will be making another as my 2 yr old son loved it!! Thanks so much for the free pattern.

      My daughter still loves her snake puppet. She really enjoys chasing after us while hissing. I am planning on make more and in child sizes.. The adult size doesn’t stay on her hands very well.

      I didn’t count the Chains at the start of each row as a stitch. When you do not count it as a stitch, it helps your seam stay straight 🙂 Hope that helps.
