Thick and Thin Toddler Hat

August 16, 2012 By Corina 8 Comments

This 12-24 months toddler hat is designed just for my daughter Ella.  Using Spinning Wheel Studio's Thick and Thin yarn I knew I could get a one of a kind look! I have never made something from such beautiful yarn until now. Not only is the hat a piece of art, but the yarn is art too. Enjoy this truly YARNTASTIC free pattern!

Be sure to check out Spinning wheel Studio on Facebook and Etsy!

Row 6-13:CH 2, HDC around. Join to top of CH 2. (40 stitches including original CH 2)
Row 14-16:CH 2, HDC around. Join to top of CH 2. (40 stitches including original CH 2)

Finish off leaving long tail. When weaving in my end I worked it back and forth up the seam, making the seam invisable!

To make my pom poms I actually used a toddler book to wrap the yarn around. I wrapped it 60 times for each pom pom. I also used 3 strands of crochet thread to tie the pom poms in the middle and for attaching to the hat. When trimming and shaping the pom poms I used a round piece of cardboard to make sure both pom poms were the same size and shape.
Attach pom poms between the 4th and 5th row of the top of the hat.

How much yarn would this take without the pompoms? I don’t want to put pompoms on a little boys hat. 🙂

It took me a little less than 70 yards. 🙂

Any plans for making a 3-6mon, or 6-12mon size hat?

Maybe eventually but it will be awhile before I can go yarn shopping again. Gotta use up a bit more of my stash first 😉

The hat is darling, but I don’t understand R1. If I make a Magic Circle, what 7 stitches do I HDC in, and when is the MC pulled tight? I know you created this 7 years ago, but I just discovered it, and would love to make it. Thanks for your help.

I’m also wondering…are rows 14 – 16 supposed to be exactly the same as 6 -13? Thank you.
