Welcome Home Beanie

June 30, 2012 By Corina 14 Comments

Every new baby needs a beanie to wear on the way home from the hospital. This free newborn baby beanie crochet pattern is very simple and easy to follow. The hat folds up so it is great when you have no clue what shape the baby's head will be.

Supplies

Size I/9- 5.5  hook.

I used Baby Bee's 4ply medium weight  Hushabye Ombre yarn with the camo beanie and I used 4 ply worsted weight I Love this Yarn with the peach pom pom beanie.

Abbreviations

CH-Chain

HDC-Half Double Crochet

CH 2 counts as a HDC

Get Started!

Row 1: Magic Circle. CH 2, 9 HDC inside magic circle. Connect to top of CH 2 (10 HDC)

Row 2: CH 2, HDC in same stitch, 2 HDC in each stitch. Connect to top of CH 2 (20 HDC)

Row 3: CH 2, HDC in same stitch, HDC in next stitch, *2 HDC in the next stitch, HDC in next stitch, repeat from * around. Connect to top of CH 2. (30 HDC)

Row 4: CH 2, HDC in same stitch, HDC in next 2 stitches, *2 HDC in the next stitch, HDC in next  2 stitches, repeat from * around. Connect to top of CH 2. (40 HDC)

Row 5-15: CH 2, HDC in each stitch. Connect to top of CH 2.

Finish off

Pom Poms

wrap yarn around 4 fingers 75 times. Tie around middle of the loops with a strand of yarn. Make sure you tie it tight and leave ends to attach to the hat. Cut loops to form your pom poms. Check out my tutorial on How To Make a Secure Pom Pom for additional tips!

It doesn’t take long at all to whip up does it? I’m glad you like it and found it to be as easy as I did. 🙂

I’ve not been crocheting for very long. I’ve tried in the past to crochet newborn beanie hats and they always came out to small. Thanks so very much for your Free patterns.. They are awesome and very easy and come out the size they need to be. I’m making up alot of these hats in different colors cuz my sister is having her 2nd set of twins and they are going to need lots of hats.

Thank you so much for the awesome feedback! The reason I designed this beanie is because I realized how different every newborns head is. Its very hard to match up with the shape and size. But with this pattern, since it not only folds up but is super soft and stretchy, it is a lot safer to make.

Love the pattern. Not sure what I did but it looks so small. I’m terrible at baby items.
