During this last week, I have tried and tested countless crochet masks. My goal was to make 4 ninja masks in the theme of the TMNT. 9 masks later I finally got it! I love the technique of making this mask and am very proud to say I came up with it. Now that I have made so many (using this pattern I have written out for you) I already have many more ideas for masks that I plan to test out in the upcoming weeks. So find a ninja or superhero near you and create them a mask of their own!
Ninja Turtle Mask
Supplies
Medium weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver or I Love This Yarn)
Using H hook
Yarn Needle (for weaving in your ends)
Iron and wet cloth (for killing yarn)
A Super Hero 😉
Stitches
CH- Chain
HDC- Half Double Crochet
DC- Double Crochet
HDC 3 Together
Slip Stitch
Get Started!
Row 1: CH 116, turn, skip 1 CH. SC in next 40 CH, HDC in next CH, DC in next 9 CH, 2 DC in next 2 CH. 3 DC in next CH. 2 DC in next CH. HDC in next CH. 2 HDC in next CH. HDC 3 together. 2 HDC in next CH. HDC in next CH. 2 DC in next CH. 3 DC in next CH. 2 DC in next 2 CH. DC in next 9 CH. HDC in next CH. SC in next 40 CH. slip stitch into the same chain. CH 1, turn.
Row 2: (working on the other side of the CH) SC in same CH and next 47 CH. CH 8. Skip 8 stitches. SC in next 3 CH. CH 8, skip 8 stitches. SC in next 48 CH. CH 1, turn.
Row 3: SC in the same stitch and next 37, HDC in next stitch, DC in next 9 stitches, DC into next CH. 2 DC in next 2 CH. 3 DC in next CH. 2 DC in next CH. HDC in next CH. 2 HDC in next CH. HDC in next CH. HDC 3 together. HDC in next CH. 2 HDC in next CH. HDC in next CH. 2 DC in next CH. 3 DC in next CH. 2 DC in next 2 CH. DC in last CH. DC in next 9 stitches. HDC in next stitch. SC in next 38 stitches.
Row 4: CH 1, SC around the entire piece. Join to first SC.
Now you need to weave in your ends. Lay the piece on a flat surface and kill the acrylic yarn! To do this you will need to lay a wet washcloth or towel over the piece and iron it. For a “How to kill acrylic yarn”check out Moogly's tutorial! *tip* killing and letting it air dry will help the fit

The TMNT masks are perfect!! My kids will love them. Thank you so much for sharing.
Kara says
Such a fun project!
Lissy says
Without TMNT, this could be used to make a ‘lone ranger’ eye mask 🙂 brilliant!
Julie Corbisiero says
Hi, these Ninja Turtle Masks are so cute and you did a great job crocheting them. Perfect for Halloween. I saw it on Hookin on Hump Day.

These are so cute, Thank-you for sharing!

I did one in black and added to a Raccoon hooded cowl I made for a friend. He loved it! Thanks you for the pattern!
Tamara - Moogly says
So great! You really nailed it Corina! Thanks for linking up on Hookin On Hump Day!
Karen Edwards says
“2 HDC in next CH. HDC 3 together. 2 HDC in next CH.” When you say HDC 3 together? Do you mean do 3 HDC in only one then do “2HDC in next chain?”
I am not sure what I keep doing wrong….:(
When I try to get to the end of the 2nd row where I am I do the last 48 it seems I need 10 more stitches before I get to MY end.
Corina says
Are your 3 HDC together lining up with The 3 that when together on the other side? Or are you on the first row?
Karen Edwards says
I googled the HDC 3together!!! Got it figured out. Thanks for the pattern my grandchildren will love it!!!
Corina says
Great! I will be working up the mask again tonight to double check my numbers too just in case. You are more than welcome to share your finished pictures on my facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/stitch11page?bookmark_t=page
Beverly Graham says
And how do you print or save this? Not being able to makes the pattern useless to me as I cannot tie up my television for that long. My family would kill meas we do not have cable.
Corina says
Did you try the “cleanprint” button at the bottom of the pattern?
Sally says
Maybe it’s just me, but the mask seems to fold in half when it’s tied so it makes it difficult to see out of. Any suggestions? I’m thinking some kind of reinforcing stitch on one side, but I’d like your input! My kid loves this thing (he just can’t see out of it!), thank you!
Corina says
Did you kill the acrylic after? I noticed mine wanted to fold a little but once it was dry it didn’t.
Carol says
Made all 4 ninja masks for my grandsons made a tie belt to match each one. They loved them.
Sue-Ellen says
I have made 2 of these. Is there a row missing? If I make it the way the pattern dictates it appears there is a row missing on the bottom of the mask. Geeze am I missing something or is the pattern incorrect?????
Corina says
Hmm, there isn’t a row missing. Are you crocheting the last strep of SC the entire way around?
Leah says
Making these for my grandchildren for Christmas. Thanks so much for sharing.
Angela says
We really like the Ninja Turtle Masks! Super cute & totally cool. 🙂
Pam says
I just finished one up and it was extremely easy to make. I am attaching it to a hat for my grandson. I know the rest of the family will also want one. Thanks for sharing.
Krystal Garcia says
Hello. Is this one size fits all? I want to make one for a 3 year old. How would I go about adjusting the size? Thank you so much.
Corina says
My daughter wore the pink one at 3 years old… but I bet if you use a size smaller hook and maybe caron simply soft yarn… it would be a better fit.
Christina says
Just made a red one…super easy and fast…love the patten….I used an H hooker like suggested’ my son who is eight and bigger then most 8 yr olds can’t really see out the eyes and I did kill the acrylic.. so I’m wondering if I used a hook size larger would that fix that problem!!! Love the patteren.. thanks for sharing…God bless
breee says
Hi! I love this pattern. I am wondering if you mind if i sell these? If i do it online i would link back here. I plan on making a bunch up for a market i am doing next month. Thank you. Bree
Corina says
I don’t mind at all! <3
Lisa D says
I’ve flogged 3 times but it still won’t lay flat for me. Did you have trouble with this before killing the acrylic? I’m dying to give a set to my grandson for him and his friends to play with!
Corina says
Killing the acrylic should make it lay flat for ya 🙂
Norma Jean says
I love these. I showed them to my son’s Sifu and am now selling them to all the students as part of the school’s campaign to help St. Jude Children’s Research hospital kick juvenile cancer’s butt!
alicia says
thank you for the free pattern 🙂 I’m a bit confused. .on the 3rd row I have 7 stitches left over..my stitch counts per row are row 1-116 row 2-122 row 3-115..what am I doing wrong? 🙁
Corina says
With row one you start with 116 chain. You wont have the same about of stitches as chain due to the increases and decreases.
Micaela says
Love this mask! Any knitting patterns out there?
Teresa says
Everything lines up except on row 2 at the end. Is it really sc 48 cause I have 9 left over if I stop at 49 and turn.
Corina says
Something must be off with your count.
Dianne says
Had to keep starting over because I kept ending up with the extra stitches, like some of the other comments stated. I finally read your directions in the parentheses and walla, I am now having fun making them.
Vivienne says
These are great! This is my first time *killing* and I’m waiting for it top finish air drying right now.
Question: I noticed someone else already asked, but I wanted to double check… mind if I make these to sell? I’ll include a link back to this page 🙂
Corina says
I love when people sell items they make from using my patterns! <3 SO yes, you can sell them!
Jenni says
Do you have a video tutorial for this somewhere? This is by far the best pattern I have seen but I am still a beginner and I can never seem to figure out how to “work on the other side of the chain…” If you could help me, I would really appreciate it!
Jenni says
Sorry I put the wrong email address in the first time. My crocheting hands are tired. lol
Corina says
I’m sorry but I don’t have all the supplies for making video tutorials.
Becky says
What does hdc together mean?
Corina says
Towards the top of the post there is a list of stitches used. There should be a video linked to how to make a HDC DEC/ HDC 2 Tog
shweta says
Hi. I absolutely loved your pattern. But when I made it for my 7 year old son, he’s not able to open his eyes properly. Is there a way we can adjust this for older kids. I used a 5 mm hook.
Patty says
thank you so mch
Maribel says
I keep getting 2 chains left over at the end of the first row. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Help please.
Corina says
Without seeing your project it’s hard to say. My guesses are either you have 2 too many starting chains, or are you doing the decrease stitches?
Mariela says
Hi, what a wonderful pattern! My question is if you killed the acrylic on the ties as well as the mask? I wasn’t sure if it mattered if the ties lost some of their stretch. Thanks!
Corina says
I did. The ties are long enough and still stretch some after killing them. 🙂
Callie says
Hi, thanks for sharing your pattern!! I’ve had trouble making the eyes “match”. I was writing out your pattern and saw that in row 1 it’s 2hdc in next, hdc 3 tog, then 2hdc in next. Makes sense but on row 3 it’s 2hdc in next, HDC IN NEXT, then hdc 3 tog. Is this meant to have that extra hdc?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, still kinda new at this but loving it!
Thanks!!
Corina says
Yeah, I did that because I wanted it to shape to the nose and face as snug as possible. Our nose is shaped differently than our forehead. 🙂
Callie says
Ah, that makes perfect sense!! Thanks for replying!!

Hello, I am trying to make this for my son. I am not a pro at crocheting but I know enough. I made the first row. I am a little confused on starting my 2 row, when you say to sc in the same stitch then in the next 47 ch. Does that mean i start in the ch my loop is coming out of?? Because normally you would just say sc in your next ch. I would think sc in your ch your loop is in would give you an increase..
Corina says
It means you SC into the same CH you just Single crocheted in last from the previous row. You will be working up the other side of the chain that you just worked up during round 1.
kori says
I am having problems with the second row…my first row looks nice and everything adds up right…the second row at the end of the row I’ll have 10 extra chains and the eyes do not look like they are in the right place…the part with the 2 bumps where it looks like the eyes should go is facing down..I have done this 3 times and end up with the same problem… What could I be doing wrong? Thanks
Corina says
If you would like, you can send me a photo via msg on my facebook page. It may help me see what’s going wrong or why it’s causing confusion. https://www.facebook.com/stitch11page/
Kori says
I read that working on the other side of the ch means flipping it upside down,..so that is what i did and i think my 2 row looks good now.. i am working on the 3rd row.. I am working into the loose chains that are part of the ch 8 of row 2. should the ch 3 together be on top of the ch 3 together from the 1st row? now i am having problems getting that part to look good.. lol sorry.. i dont read patterns very often,, i am more of a hands on learner..
Kori says
Not sure what I am doing wrong…I have done the first row and everything lines up with the amount of chains i should have…but when i turn and do the second row it starts getting all messed up..the eyes dont look like they are in the right place and I always have 10 rows left over. I have taken it apart and started it over again a few times and it keeps looking the same. getting really annoyed with it.. seems like it should be easy to do.. not sure why i am having so much trouble with the second row…. the part where it looks like the eyes should go is facing the bottom of my work…..so unless i flipped the whole thing upside down to do to second row….nothing looks right…. thanks
Kristen says
Thanks for this. I’m directing a super hero Christmas program this year and I adapted this pattern to make a cat woman mask. So happy with it! If I was a techie I’d post a pic but don’t know how.
tari says
Thank you for this pattern. It was real easy. I did have some problems with the bottom of eyes matching but am in the process of undoing and starting over. I’ll let you know if I have any problems the second time. thank you again. Tari
Kristan says
I have taken this out and redone it about 8 times now. I’m getting frustrated. Lol. Something isn’t adding up. Ibknow all the stitches to use. But on the second row I always about 10 stitches short. On row 1, when it’s done if I told it in half it lines up completely. When I am on row 2 when I told it in half, one side is longer then the other. I kept going about 4 tries ago and just added the 10 extra stitches to row 2 and did row 3 and none of it lined up. The 37 in that row doesn’t seem right. I don’t know what the heck I’m doing wrong! Was trying to make these for my boys for their Easter baskets.
Marilena says
Hello there! Thank you for the pattern! I’m crocheting this mask with cotton yarn. What should I do at the end to make it flat??
