Crocheting Slippers: What to Know
When it comes to crocheting slippers, always consider that they need to be durable. These will be on your feet and will rub against the floor with every step, so you must consider the wear and tear they will face. This is not the project for your delicate fibers and expensive yarns.
You may want to consider using a smaller crochet hook than you normally would for the yarn weight you are using to keep the stitches firm and the fabric solid, which will allow them to wear better.
Slippers may have a bit of a learning curve because of the shaping, but you should get the hang of it quickly and be able to crochet a slipper in a couple of hours.
Choosing the Soles
Crocheted slippers can be slippery, especially if your home is uncarpeted. Adding leather pads or rubber soles to your slippers makes them last longer and keeps them from being as slippery.
You can purchase soles made especially for use with slippers or use soles made for shoemaking. Some crochet slippers patterns even call for using flip-flops as the base!
It’s possible to make your own soles to fit your slippers perfectly, either out of felt, suede, or another material.
You can purchase anti-skid fabric (it’s meant to be used for things like footed pajamas) and apply that to the bottom of your slippers, or use a product like this anti-slip paint that will make the bottom of your slippers have a better grip.
How to Measure the Foot Size for Crochet Slippers
Crocheted slippers need to fit a person’s feet, of course, and while crochet slippers patterns may only come in a couple of sizes, it’s important to make sure they will fit the person you want to make them for before you start stitching.
Use a tape measure or yardstick and measure the foot from the back of the heel to the end of the longest toe. You can also trace the foot onto a piece of paper and measure that.
Free crochet slippers patterns don’t always indicate their width or the foot circumference they fit, but if you want to measure these things, too, you can. The width and circumference should both be measured at the widest part of the foot unless otherwise indicated in the pattern.
If you don’t have the person handy that you want to stitch for you can consult the standard foot sizes based on shoe sizes from the Craft Yarn Council.
The Best Yarn for Crochet Slippers
When it comes to picking yarn for your crochet slippers, there are a few things to keep in mind. You will want to choose a yarn that is strong but soft if you plan to wear your slippers without socks.
Being able to wash your slippers in the washing machine (if the sole treatment is also washable) is nice.
If you are crocheting for yourself, you know how warm you would like your slippers to be. People who are always cold will like slippers that use a tight stitch and warm yarn like wool, while those who are warm-natured might like slippers made of lighter weight cotton or a cotton and acrylic blend.
You can always consult the pattern you are planning to crochet and see what kind of yarn they recommend as well.
Wool
Wool is a popular choice for slippers because it is warm, durable, and cozy.
Superwash yarn, which has been treated so that it can be machine washed without felting, is a great choice if you need your slippers to be washable (and, again, if any sole treatments are also washable.
Non-superwash wool needs to be treated a bit more gently, or it can be felted deliberately to make a more solid fabric that is warm and repels water.
Wool blends can also be a good choice to give you the warmth of wool with extra durability. Sometimes wool blends can be machine washed.
Cotton
Another yarn good for crocheting slippers is cotton yarn. Cotton yarns are strong, lightweight, and breathable.
Cotton is easy to care for but it doesn’t have the memory of wool yarn, meaning if it stretches to fit your foot it might not spring back to its original shape when you take it off. That’s one reason a cotton and wool or cotton and acrylic blend might be preferable.
Acrylic
Acrylic yarn is probably the most durable choice out there. It is washable, generally inexpensive, and comes in every color you can think of.
It might not be as soft as some of the other options, but if it feels ok to crochet with and you always wear socks with your slippers, you might not mind so much. Acrylic yarn is not very breathable so it can make your feet hot if stitched in a tight stitch like single crochet.
After you’ve knit a pair or two of slippers using the yarn called for in the pattern, as you use them you may decide that you have a preferred yarn type for slippers you make for yourself that you want to use when you crochet slippers for other people as well.
