How to Make a Hat that Fits

In general, there are no differences between crocheting hats for women (or children) and men. The only difference is that men tend to have larger heads than women, so you need to take care that your hat is a little bigger so it will fit the person you want to wear it.

To get the correct measurements, you need to take a tape measure and wrap it around the person’s head, across the forehead, and over the ears if the ears are to be covered by the hat. Be careful not to wrap the tape measure too tightly.

The average head circumference for adults is around 21 to 23 inches. A man’s head has an average of 23 inches, while a woman’s head size is 22 inches. But of course, these may vary, so having an exact measurement helps, especially if you are designing your own hat.

It should also be noted that hats tend to be made with 1-2 inches of negative ease. That is, the hat is worked so it’s a little smaller than the actual head measurement. That’s because yarn stretches and this makes the hat snug but not tight.

How Do You Crochet a Hat?

If you’ve never crocheted a hat before, it’s not too difficult but it’s helpful to understand the construction before you get started. There are three main ways that hats can be crocheted:

  • Worked flat as a rectangle, then seamed up the side and cinched at the top.
  • Worked from the top down, starting with a magic circle or a chain made into a circle. Stitches are increased to the size needed, then worked straight to the bottom.
  • Worked from the bottom up. Ribbing may be worked flat and seamed, with stitches worked into the side to form the hat or any edging may be worked as part of the hat. Here stitches may be decreased toward the top to shape the crown.

Some hats have ribbing while others do not. Ribbing on crochet hats is typically made by working some stitches in the back loop only. This gives the fabric a stretch similar to ribbing in knitting. Check your pattern for more details.

Men’s hat crochet patterns can be worked in any stitch you like, but they are often made with simple, classic stitches like single crochet and half double crochet. These stitches make hats that are warm and comfortable and not likely to be deemed too feminine by the recipient.

If you want to try some different stitches for your hat patterns, check out our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library. This collection of 45 stitches includes video tutorials to help you learn, and they’re great to use for all sorts of projects.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get to stitching with these free crochet men’s hat patterns.
