Sunshine Sara

by Corina on May 4, 2012

Sunshine Sara’s sunhat (I dare you to say that 3 times in a row ;) ) is sized for children. This hat is great for blocking the sun when playing in the yard on a nice summer day. Looking for other sizes? Check out these sizes, 6-9 month, 12-18 month, Toddler, and adult.

Supplies:
5mm hook
4 ply cotton ( I used Peaches and Creme cotton yarn)
Abbreviations:
CH – Chain
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double crochet
SC – single Crochet

(CH-3 does not count as DC)

Instructions:
Round 1: Magic Ring, CH 3, DC 10, pull ring tight, join to top CH of CH 3
Round 2: CH 3, 2 DC each DC around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (20 DC)
Round 3: CH 3. *2 DC in next DC, DC in next DC, repeat from * around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (30 DC)
Round 4: CH 3. *2 DC in next DC, DC in next 2 DC, repeat from * around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (40 DC)
Round 5: CH 3. *2 DC in next DC, DC in next 3 DC, repeat from * around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (50 DC)
Round 6: CH 3. *2 dc in next DC, DC in next 4 DC, repeat from * around. Join to top CH of CH 3. (60 DC)
Round 7-12: CH 3, DC in each DC around. Join to top CH of CH 3. Do not finish off.

Add one more row to the last step (totaling 13) for bigger kids.

Floppy Brim:

Round 1: ~Working in front loop only for this round only~CH 2 *2 HDC in next loop, HDC in next 2 loops, repeat from * around, connect to top of CH 2
Round 2: CH 2 *2 HDC in next HDC, HDC in next 2 HDC, repeat from * around, connect to top of CH 2
Round 3-4: CH 2 *2 HDC in next HDC, HDC in next 4 HDC, repeat from * around, connect to top of CH 2
Round 5: CH 2 *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next 5 stitches, repeat from * around. connect to top of CH 2
Round 6: CH 1, SC around, connect to CH 1

I used 7 strands of yarn and weaved them in and out every 2 stitches
in row 12 (13 for the bigger kid size). Make sure you leave a little slack so the hat can
stretch over the childs head.

I love this pattern! How many balls of yarn did you use for the white part? I would love to make one of these for each of my nieces for Christmas. Thanks!!

It took less than two balls of white yarn. :)

Printing out another pattern. I am particpating in a give away through fb ~ I have decided to do this Red Heart’s with Love Boysenberry with a pink trim and flower adornment. As always I will credit you as the designer; I may ad a few extra rounds so it will be more suited to colder weather ~ will send you a pic when done. Once again, thank you ~ Cheryl

I love the pattern and would love to crochet one for my granddaughter and myself but can’t figure out how to print the pattern. I tried copy and paste, but it would not allow me to do that, it has a pdf program that you would have to download, but I am always leary about downloading anything from the internet. Is it possible to get the pattern another way?
