Child Size Granny Slouch Hat

November 10, 2013 By Corina 22 Comments

Child Size Slouch Hat - free Crochet Pattern

After writing the free crochet patterns for the Adult Granny Slouch and the Toddler Granny Slouch, I had many requests for a child size version.
I had forgotten this was even on my to do list until a couple days ago. I have been in somewhat of a crochet rut. The last two things I have created were not very appealing to me. One of those were even worked up using a paid pattern. I was so disappointed! In order to feel like I was accomplishing something, I returned to my handy Adult Granny Slouch pattern… knowing I would be happy with the result. As soon as I finished I knew it was finally time to make the child size.
The Granny slouch hat is great for Fall, Winter, and Spring. The wide band at the bottom of the hat is the ideal width to keep those ears warm and covered.
With Christmas approaching, many of us will be tight on money. One of my favorite things about this hat is that it's even scrap yarn friendly. Have fun with your colors and yarn choices!

Supplies
Medium Weight yarn. I used Caron Simply Soft. ( I also tested the pattern using ILTY which worked up nicely just slightly larger)
Yarn Needle for weaving in your ends.
J- 6.00 MM Crochet Hook

Stitches
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
HDC DEC – Half Double Crochet Decrease

Get Started!

-CH 3 counts as a double crochet-
(if you choose not to change colors for each round, you will need to slip stitch into the next 2 stitches and then slip stitch into CH space.)
*tip* I am coming back to this post to make a note… I am currently making this hat for a preschooler. I am adding an additional 2 decrease stitches to round 14 to make it a little bit more snug for her.
Round 1: Magic circle, CH 3, 2 DC, CH 2, **3 DC, CH 2. Repeat from ** one more time. Pull magic ring tight. Join to top CH of CH 3. (9 DC)
Round 2: Change colors. Attaching to CH space. {CH 3, 2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 2}<all in same CH space. {{3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC CH 2}} <in next 2 CH spaces. Join to top CH of CH 3.  (18 DC)
Round 3: Change colors. Attaching to CH space. {CH 3, 2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 2}<all in same CH space. {{3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC CH 2}} <in next 5 CH spaces. Join to top CH of CH 3.  (36 DC)
Round 4: Change colors. Attaching to CH space.{CH 3, 2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 2}<all in same CH space. {3 DC CH 2}< in next CH space. **{ 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 2}<in next CH space.  {3 DC CH 2}< in next CH space.  Repeat from ** around. Join to top CH of CH 3 (54 DC)
Round 5-12: Change colors. Attaching to CH space. CH 3, 2 DC into same space. CH 1. **3 DC into next CH space. CH 1. Repeat from ** around. Join to top CH of CH 3 (54 DC)
Round 13: Change colors. Attaching to CH space. CH 3, 2 DC into same space. **3 DC into next space. Repeat from ** around. Join to the top CH of CH 3. (54 DC)
Round 14: Change colors. CH 1, HDC DEC, HDC into next 25 stitches. HDC DEC. HDC into last 25 stitches. Join to top of first HDC DEC.  (52 HDC)
Round 15-17: CH 1, HDC into same stitch and each stitch around. Join to top of first HDC. ( 52 HDC)
Change colors
Round 18-19: CH 1, SC into same stitch and each stitch around. Join into first SC. (52 SC)
Finish off and weave in all of your ends.

I made the adult version of this hat this afternoon. It was very simple to make but it turned out huge. I used worsted weight yarn and the K hook as the directions stated.

Any suggestions on how to block it to make it smaller?

    Thank you kindly.

I’m not sure how to block to make it smaller but the child size hat may turn out ideal for you. I was able to stretch it over my head when using regular WW yarn.

The one made with simply soft… I made for a 4 year old 🙂 But they do stretch really well and I could even stretch it over my head.. so it is great for children of all sizes… Simply soft does work up a tad smaller than most med weights.

Hmm, I wonder why it isn’t wanting to work. Maybe try hitting Ctrl P?

I think I just messed up the 14th row. When you wrote to HDC in next 25 stitches, you’re only counting the DCs as stitches and not the chains?

Hey, I am hoping to make a matching pair for a 10 year old and a 5 year old. They live out of state, so I can’t exactly plop them on their heads to see if they fit.

I made the child size, and it looks like it will fit the 5 year old and not the 10 year old… Do I make an adult one for the 10 year old then?
