How to Use Unique Crochet Stitches

One of the great things about crochet is that you can use just about any stitch for any kind of project.

The characteristics of the stitch might help you determine projects it would be better to use it for. Stitches that are more open might be better for summer projects, for example, while denser, more textured stitches are great for hats, sweaters, and other cold-weather garments.

You can work up swatches of a lot of these interesting crochet stitches and make a colorful and funky afghan for your home, or use them for pillows, washcloths, scarves, or any other project you want to try.

The worst thing that can happen is that you don’t like the stitch for the purpose you wanted to use it, but you can always rip it out and try again. So don’t be afraid to try new stitches!

A Solid Foundation for New Crochet Stitches

Before we get into the stitches, if you need a better foundation of skills before you start trying these decorative crochet stitches, my Crochet Fundamentals workshop teaches you all the basics you need to know about crocheting.

It’s a good idea, before diving into these unique crochet stitches, to have a firm grounding in the most common crochet stitches like single, double, and triple crochet, as well as some of the decorative stitches like puffs, bobbles, and waffle stitch.

If you need a refresher, check out this post on the 12 most common crochet stitches. It includes patterns to practice if you haven’t tried them yet.

As you begin to learn new stitches, it’s a great idea to keep track of what you’ve learned in some way. Whether you keep digital or paper notes, a Pinterest board with links to stitches, or photos of your swatches along with a copy of the pattern, keeping a record of the stitches you’ve tried and liked will help you when you’re trying to pick a stitch for a new project.

Materials for Practicing Decorative Crochet Stitches

In this blog post, we will be learning how to crochet decorative and unique crochet stitches so you don’t need a lot of materials. All you need is some yarn and a crochet hook that works for that weight of yarn.

Worsted or medium weight yarn with a size 5.5-6.5mm hook is ideal for practicing new stitches. This weight of yarn isn’t too thick or too thin.

Choose a smooth, light-colored yarn so it’s easy to see the stitches. Any fiber you like is fine, but this is a great time to use whatever’s in your stash to practice with.

You’ll also need a pair of scissors for trimming your yarn when you’re done practicing (assuming you want to keep your swatches) and a yarn needle for weaving in ends if desired.

If you are ready to learn new crochet stitches, here are 30 decorative crochet stitches you’ll be excited to try. Happy crocheting!

Textured Crochet Stitches

There are so many wonderful textured crochet stitches out there. These patterns combine basic stitches and chains or work several stitches into the same stitch to make a unique texture.

None of them are that difficult but you may want to practice with a swatch before taking on a full project with each stitch. Remember, swatches can make great washcloths if you stitch them in cotton yarn!

Owl Purse - Weaving Loom - Review

I was approached by Red Heart Yarns to review an adjustable weaving loom by Plaid.  I have never used a loom, let alone a WEAVING loom! I was a bit intimidated by the idea and felt like a complete rebel when I volunteered to do a review.
I did NOT write a “pattern” but I took lots of photos! I want to share with you my process, and what was going through my mind the entire time!

All supplies for this project was supplied by Red Heart Yarns and Plaid.

Stitch11 Watercolor - Boutique Bow - Olivias Tutu - TWO FREE CROCHET PATTERNS

I have been working a lot, but not sharing enough!!!
Before I go into detail of what's been going on behind the scenes, I will share with you TWO free crochet patterns!! The Boutique Bow and The Olivia's Tutu.  Both of these designs are being worn by my daughter in the photo and painting above. <3
Now.. this painting is one of the reasons you haven't been seeing me as much. I have taken a  mini break from crochet (for the last two weeks) to enjoy some other arts I love.
Two weeks? But I've been MIA a little longer than two weeks right?!
Red Heart has been in contact with me.. and I have had the opportunity to design some patterns FOR them!!! Can you believe it? If you have been following me for the last 5 years.. you know how amazing this is to me and my family.  Here soon, once they start publishing those patterns, I will be sure to post the links and photos here!
Not only do I get to design things for them from time to time… but I am also now a Red Heart Joy Creator.
Red Heart sends me yarn, lets me create, and then we share the pattern here with you for free! How exciting! I received a new package today!!!
I have a few ideas, but check out the yarn below and give me more ideas! My brain is stuck in painting and it's about time to come back to my fibers. <3

Joyful Star Teething Ring - Free Crochet Pattern

I have joined together with the Red Heart Joy Creators to celebrate Christmas in July. (Which also happens to be my BIRTHDAY! Woohoo!)

We were wanting to run with the theme “joy”. What better way to celebrate a joyful Christmas in July than giving a Joyful Star Teething Ring to a fussy teething baby nearest & dearest to you!? (say that 5 times fast)

Below, you will see how to purchase the all natural teething rings. I REALLY love these! I can imagine this project selling like CRAZY at craft fairs. They will be great for baby showers and surprise gifts for babies suffering from teething pain.
I have also fallen in LOVE with the Red Heart Baby Hugs yarn. It's soft, works up clean, and is easy on your hands. Perfect for hooking up projects for babies. This yarn would also be great for amigurumi and could possibly completely replace your “go to” medium weight yarn!

Be sure to check out the other Red Heart Joy Creators of this fun celebration. The list will be located bellow the pattern.

Stitch11 is learning to SEW!

July 4, 2016 By stitch11 2 Comments

Stitch11 is learning NEW stitches!

I've been facing a battle with my own creative mind. I LOVE crochet… but am getting jaded. I keep trying to mix it up so I can get my crojo back, but I finally realized that I just need to open my world to new stitches!
After a few day hunt, I located my dusty sewing machine. The one I BEGGED my mother to buy me years ago… not realizing how different it was compared to the one I used growing up.
I packed it away, with hate for it… because I just-couldn't figure the darn thing out.
FINALLY! I am breaking the chains in my own mind, and I am determined to conquer this machine once and for all!
I decided to start small, and repurpose some old clothes. Check it out!

13600125_1097637270275185_5695978483460883160_n

I used a pair of yoga pant's my daughter had grown too tall for, and the bottom of a dress that she also had grown too tall for. SO CUTE!

Next, I used the bottom of one of my old dresses, and for the waste band I used my daughters T-shirt she had outgrown. She loves it so much that she wants to wear it on her first day of school. She said “It's PERFECT!” with the biggest smile. <3 Warmed my heart!

Kitty Puppet - Free Crochet Pattern- Design by Stitch11

It all started with the Stitch11 Snake Puppet. It wasn't long before my daughter and I also designed the Puppy Puppet.  And now a few years later, my daughter still requests the puppy puppet during bath time. <3 When I told her how long she has had her puppet, she agreed that she really LOVES it, and requested I make a cat puppet too.
I hope the children in your life love this free cat puppet pattern too. <3

Free DIY Rainbow Pony Costume Tutorial

Photo Tutorial – How to make WINGS!

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

These wings are one of the last pieces to my daughters costume. To see the previous pieces/tutorials check out Rainbow Pony Hat, Rainbow Tail, Rainbow Lightning Bolt, and the Leg Warmers and Fingerless Gloves.

For these wings you will need:

Less than 1 yard of fleece
Cardboard (about 4 cereal boxes)
Hot glue gun and sticks
3/8 elastic
Scissors

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

First, you will want to draw the back layer of the wing.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Cut it out, and trace it the other direction for the other wing.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Cut the other out, and now you will trace them both again. We will be layering them to make them stronger.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Cut out your second set like you did the first. Now lay them on more cardboard and trace the inside of the pieces. This is just to make sure your second layer has the same size and shape as the back layer.

See….

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Cut out your first one, flip it, and trace it for the other side.

And, trace them again. Cut them out as well!

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Next, you will hot glue the matching pieces together. So instead of 8 pieces, you now have 4. Each wing is stronger with them doubled and glued together. Go around the edges and cut the wonky looking pieces off to smooth it out.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Trace each piece onto your fleece, from both sides of each piece.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Start hot gluing each piece to the already glued together cardboard pieces.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

While gluing, you will have to glue little parts at a time. If you try to glue the entire thing at once, half of your glue will dry before you place the fleece on it. (Learn from my mistakes! ha!)

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

After you glue all the pieces together, trim the wonky edges. If you do not have wonky edges, you are a much better tracer and cutter than I am. 😉

This is what you have!

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Now make a rectangle the same way you made your wings. 2 layers of cardboard hot glued together with fleece hot glued around it.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Hot glue the rectangle onto the large wings.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Hot glue the smaller wings onto the top of the rectangle piece.

How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Cut your elastic at about 18 inches (adjust for the person who will be wearing it) tie them into a knot to make them a loop. Hot glue it down. I used an overload of glue. 😉
How to make WINGS - Photo tutorial

Cut another rectangle of fleece and hot glue it all over, over the elastic.

Ghostly Activities - Crochet and Crafts - Stitch11

My neighbors started decorating for Autumn. The moment my daughter noticed their pumpkins and scarecrows, she started begging for us to start decorating too.
We pulled out the Halloween boxes and played with all the old costumes and masks. Made a mess with fake spider webs… and realized we are missing decorations from the move.
I'm not too worried about all the missing decorations as I am sure they are packed away in the back of one of the closets with an invisibility cloak draped over them. >.<
Besides… this is a perfect opportunity to get crafty!
I decided to share with you my adventure for finding the funnest decorations and activities. Each week until Halloween, we will be creating a few different things from different categories. The first is Ghostly Activities! Have fun!

First, the non crochet related Ghostly Activities.

  1. Simple Coffee Filter Ghosts
  2. Ghost Jugs
  3. Ghost Garland
  4. Ghost Rocks
  5. Glue Ghosts
  6. Smoking Boo Bombs

Now, the (free) Crochet Ghostly Activities!

  1.  Lollipop Ghost Crochet Pattern
  2. Ghost Candy Bowl
  3. Amigurumi Ghosts (photo tutorial)
  4. Ghost Puppet
  5. Ghost Applique/Coaster
